ADDED: And then I read your note that it isn't sky, but out of focus landscape. :( Oh well, the colours are beautiful regardless. Message edited by author 2013-01-14 17:08:41. |

Sorry, that's just very sad. No further comment. |
I think what he means is EXIF data. He is also being complimentary. I would have asked the same.
I love the image. There are a few on DPC who do it well and this is one of those. Smooth edible goodness. |
Thank you, Harvey. I pay almost no attention to EXIF data, but I'll try to include it if it is important to others. |

Maybe try a small white or gold reflector by your lens (use a white cardboard, cut a hole for the lens, put it on he front of the lens) to throw a bit of light on the front part of the rind. I like the detail in this one. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 01/14/2013 12:02:56 AM | 2013 PAW - Week 1by MarkBComment: It's a great idea to get closer to your subject! In this case, I like how you show us just 1/4 of the slice, it's very recognizeable and yet almost something that you don't know what it is.
I think the technicals are lacking a bit in this photo. First, you're going at it from a bit to the side rather than straight on. Maybe that's on purpose, but, to my mind it isn't a sharp enough angle to look intentional and thus ends up looking a bit like a mistake. Your light is a tad on the harsh side, The focus is very narrow, and on the front edge of the slice. Most everything else is a blur. Blur is lovely, but, as before, it is lovely when it is intentional and deliberate. When it looks like a focusing issue, then it looks not so good. Maybe try a higher f stop, or go a bit further back to get a greater area of sharpness. Make sure you focus in the middle of the area you want in focus (talking front to back). Make sure your lens front is parallel to the subject for maximum sharpness.
Anyway. Macro photography can be great fun, I hope you have fun trying stuff out. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

I like the idea, but it seems to me that you almost have 3 separate subjects in this work, the bottles, the blade, the skin. To my mind, that's 2 too many. I think your intention is to show off the bottles while using the blade/skin as supporting elements. I think you need to somehow emphasize that the bottles are your subject, with better light and a better compo, and use the qualities of the blade/skin to complement the bottles, not compete with them.
All that said, it is a neat idea, very much worth further exploration! Still life photography is difficult. It requires good setups and a keen sense of design, and excellent light. It doesn't usually have much " story" to rely on, so visual beauty, the design, becomes your story, and your lighting sets the mood. It's not an easy field, but it is very controllable, thus it can be achieved without depending so much on the elements or the moment or all the other "situation" dependent genres.
Anyway. Long speech. Hope this is a bit helpful.

It feels to me like nothing is getting anywhere, but it is all trapped in little circles. I do like the wild diagonals, and I also very much like how it is such a common scene, so everyday (well, everyday on rainy days, when the trees are bare). I love common scenes! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
