For me the most poignant thing is the marks on the floor and walls indicating that something used to be there. That is the emptiness and loss.

I don't think you need to excuse (to anyone, ever) the grief of losing a 91 year old. I understand the impulse, and the funeral is full of people saying what a full life she had, and how lucky she was, as if mourning were inappropriate. But all of us who have love in our lives need to be grieved when we go. This is not a critique of your essay in any way, except to say that your essay has reminded me of these feelings and made them sharp again.

I wish I had a testament like this essay to the nonagenarian that I lost.

Two artificial dragons begin this essay. All the vividness that follows is thus dragon's breath (or peacock feathers).

Terrific street photography, great example of when color works in photography, and I love the framing device of the first and last photos.

Sorry, I'm not much for "constructive criticism." If something works, don't fix it.

I accept this photo as a framing device for the essay. You start with 2 dragons and end with a peacock. Once can contemplate the similarities and differences between dragon and peacock.

You have different kinds of noise. Someone who is too taken aback by blur might not notice this, and just see blur, but I see different qualities of blur and noise in different photos and groups of photos.

These photos have some kind of voodoo. There is some sort of dark magic to these. It's beautiful and scary.

Paul, I wish I could say that's exactly what I was thinking.

But thinking gets me in trouble.

The "black dog" is what I call an anchorless allegory, like the Wizard of Oz. It can point to many things. I think much of my poetry is an exploration of the dark side, and depression is a dive into the dark side, so the connection you found is an insightful one, imho.
