I wish all the photos were as stunning as this one, but even so, the cumulative effect is good. I like being immersed in chess this way. I love the idea of GAMES and having smaller essays about different games, each with its own feeling

I get a very strange sensation from these photos, and certainly one that only an essay can achieve. It is difficult to explain, but I will try, and it has to do with the frame.

The photographer decides what is in the frame, and also what is out of frame. This is perhaps the most important thing a photographer does. With these shadows, I feel like the frame has come into the photo, it even comes into some of the people in the photo. But it feels more like a gift than a violation (though really a little of both).

I feel like you're generously showing us the world outside of the photograph, but the only way you can do that is by leaving it dark. It's quite a profound magic trick. It's almost as though I could close my eyes and step into these photos.
