day 25 - air conditionedby rachelellenComment: Originally posted by Germaine: I remember US 99 very well as we used to drive it to get to Sacramento to visit my grandparents. During the summer we used to drive it at night to avoid the heat, so the air conditioning in the sign had a real purpose.
In those days the highway went through the downtown sections of places like Bakersfield, Fresno, Merced, Modesto, Chowchilla, Lodi, etc. Seeing these places at night was a real eye-opener for a kid of ten or so, and it was like driving through another country.
I went north on I-5 a few months ago. It seemed like it went straight for 300 miles and didn't go near a single town. No atmosphere at all. |
I-5 is so depressing through California, there is no doubt about it at all. At least 99 still goes through the cities, and you could choose to make a more meandering, sightseeing trip of it if you wanted to. Whereas the whole purpose of I-5 is that you get on at one end and dump yourself off again at the other without having seen a single interesting thing to slow you down. |

day 23 - goodbye.jpgby rachelellenComment: Originally posted by thomaspeople: What a great picture, and a great story to back it up. Sounds like you've got a petty good kid there.
So maybe I've missed the rest of the story, but what about the house/property you were looking at from Day 7?
I still like that view. |
Thanks for asking. That property is tied up in probate, so it's a real mess and we won't have a clue whether we can get it or not for a while. The whole situation is very frustrating. We're encountering so many roadblocks in the home-buying process (people not returning our calls, other people putting in offers JUST before we do, annoying stuff like that) that we're beginning to wonder if God has other plans for us at this point. We'll wait and see. Message edited by author 2007-07-26 01:22:52. |

Day 21 Obsessionby thomaspeopleComment: I don't get it either. I think, honestly, that they're just mildly interesting kids' books (nowhere near the quality of, say, C.S. Lewis or Beverly Cleary) that got popular and then got great marketing and then went viral. I think in fifty years, a few people will still be reading the books, but mostly they'll be remembered for all the hype.
Nice photograph, though -- what a humorous expression. Your daughter seems like she must be a lot of fun. :) |

Day 22 Harry Peeperby thomaspeopleComment: hee! brilliant. I agree with cfarrell -- you should send a watermarked representative sample of these shots to whoever it is that makes those non-food "snacks". I far prefer looking at your pictures to actually eating the vile things. |

Happy Days (Day 22)by karmatComment: Oh, beautiful. "Daisies are the friendliest flowers" -- from the wisdom of Nora Ephron via Meg Ryan. :)
Sorry to hear about your daughter's illness and your migraine -- I hope you are both feeling better by now. |

Flowers (Day 21)by karmatComment: oh my gosh. That story is exactly why I am not ever intending to be anywhere near a professional photographer. Did you come home and scream?
Nice shot of the coneflowers, though. |

Jolly Ranchers (Day 20)by karmatComment: LOVE JOLLY RANCHERS. Sersly. When I have a transcribing job they are an absolute essential -- the brilliant flavor gives me something to enjoy while my hands, eyes, and ears all have to be engaged in much less interesting tasks.
I also love the color and detail on this shot. Great job! |
