Relaxing With a Good Book

Love the creativeness in this composed portrait. Very clever! After a hard day at the office this dog is ready to curl up with a good book:-) Love the addition of the glasses for it really helps strengthen the idea of this poochie opening up a book to read it. Without the glasses the connection would not be as strong. Lighting and composition are good. Only one little critique and that is that I wish the right eye was as visible at the left eye. You caught a bit of catchlight/reflection in the left eye and had it also been in the right eye it would make it more visible/noticible. Not to mention it would FURTHER add visual interest/appeal to the image of a very smart dog who reads by showing the "sparks of intellience" in both eyes.

Very cute puppy. I like how you keep your set-up simple and clean. The rust red background works well with the greyish/brown tones of the dog. The white fur 'bed' it rests on offers a nice soft place for the puppy to rest not to mention it projects a subtle feel of softness to the viewer; the puppy and the fur are soft to touch if you just reach out. Lighting is great. There are no harsh shadows and we get to see every lovely detail in this pet portrait. The expression of the puppy also adds visual interest. With a cock of the head a dog/puppy seems to be studying us the viewer in curiosity. Great capture.

Lighting, background, set-up, colors, and expression of the dog is great! With the dog's open mouth it appears to be flashing us a great big smile. Very cute and good pet portrait.

Jack Russell's are such bundles of energy and zippy little dogs so I commend that you got this one to sit long enough for you to take this wonderfully expressive photo. Love the look on his/her face. Mouth is open is a seemingly wide happy smile. The terrier is also in his/her element with the backdrop of the park of which I can see the dog happily tearing around with his/her boundless energy. A very nice portrait of a happy dog.

I can make out very few details of the face. I can barely see the nose, there is no eye (I am going to assume that this is a sleeping cat) and the head is vaguely outlined by the sheen of the hairs picking up the lighting. Mayhap it might be that the monitor calibration is the culprit or upping the gamma or brightness & contrast might help the cat be more visible. Having a black cat on a black background is very challenging because you don't have contrasting colors. Thus lighting becomes very important. Mayhap you needed a stronger light or another light to illuminate the left half of the cat's face seen here so that the viewer could greater appreciate the features of this sleeping cat.

The colors and the sharp details in this cat portrait are all there EXCEPT we only see half the face! The other half is totally lost in shadow - even the eye, the pink of the right half of the nose and the normally pink shade of the inner ear on the right hand side are all lost to shadow. Sometimes a face/portrait that is half in shadow can add drama and interest to a photo's appeal but there is no shadow of mystery/drama in this shot. Lighting and the straight on eye level angle of the shot make it a standard portrait shot where one expects to see the full details of the face in full. Better illumination of the right half of the cat's face would improve the appeal of the photo because the viewer will be more able to fully appreciate the cat's portrait.

"That face, that face, that cover girl face." This photo could easily be on the cover of a cat/pet magazine that you see sold at Petsmart stores. Wow, just look at those gorgious blue eyes! They really draw the viewer in. The little touch of soft focus adds to the dreamy look especially since the attention is arrested by those baby blues.

Great set-up but sometimes it's all in the expression and this little poochie has got the sad doe eyes down pat. The look in those eyes draw you in then one notices the set-up. Cute and creative set-up. Color is wonderful. Lighting is good but could be even better with maybe another light or two strategically placed to avoid/lessen/eliminate those shadows that fall on the ground.Great job nonetheless.

Love that sad-doe eyed expression on this beagle! It is the expression that really makes this portrait. I really think that the visual impact of the photo would move out of the good category and into the exceptional one if you went for a tighter focus on the face. A tight square crop or rectangular crop on just the head and a tad of the upper body would keep the attention of the viewer squarely arrested on the face and that wonderfully sad expression. Plus keeping the background to just a simple red helps the dogs darker/black tones really pop visually.

I really like the B&W approach you took to this portrait shot. It really calls to attention the textures, shapes, and patterns of the cat stalking through the grass. Look at the great detail from the whiskers to the blades of grass to the hairs from the cat's ears! Exposure is just about perfect with the exception of the foreground paw that is in shadow. I think it would add greater visual impact if it was well light like the rest of the cat because then the impression/illusion of it stepping out of the tall grasses and coming towards us would be greater.
