SNAFU by muckpondComment: Congrats. Great idea and execution. Unfortunately this reminds me of a little accident I had this week when my little ecosphere with shrimp broke while shooting my Low Key entry (a light fell on it). I had them for several years and there were just two left, which strangely enough is the same number of fish you have in this shot. Message edited by author 2007-03-05 00:23:09. |

In Love...by slav_kComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Hi Slavik. I like the way you set this up. Composition is good. The subjects are centered but your use of shadow DOF helps to push the focal point off-center which makes this work.
Lighting is also good but you did clip the highlights somewhat. Just lower the light intensity or diffuse it more to keep that from happening.
Overall the image is solid. Good lighting, composition, color and contrast. It also fits the challenge, IMO. Your score however doesn't reflect your good points so much as it reflects your chosen subject. Toys, figurines, statues and the like are very difficult to do well with regardless of how well it's shot. So if you plan on shooting something like this again and want to improve your score you may want to incorporate a more clever idea or do some more things with the lighting to win you creativity points. You're definitely on the right track looking at some of your other entries so just keep at it. |

Enforced Savingsby TajhadComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
This a bizzare photo. I say bizzare because on one hand she is homeless but on the other hand I get the impression that she's content. The balanced composition (subject and ATM) and vibrant colors convey a sort of symbiosis of the situation that seems rather positive. She's relaxed and carefree and in a good spot for handouts. Now whether this is all true or not is beside the point but the photo conveys this, IMO.
Not much more to say other than great job. |

Where to now?by thorgilsComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
My first impression unfortunately is about the technicals. While I like grainy images this one doesn't quite work for me. It kinda looks like you cropped this very tightly and that's why it looks the way it does.
That aside the composition does do some good things. You made the best out of that background and you gave the subject some negative space. However for this challenge context is king and you didn't give your subject enough of a surrounding to better understand the moment. Her expression could be made more interesting if more was shown.
Lighting, contrast and b/w conversion are all good. |

Sad Bridgeby ApeeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Overall, good technicals. The shot is well exposed, sharp and has good contrast. Your composition could be good but it lacks that something extra. While you don't need to have a subject it does help and here your composition is begging for one. A vanishing point, a figure cast in shadow down the road or something. Instead there is just a quasi end to things but not really as the bridge sweeps further away from view so I'm left wondering what exactly is the point of the angle.
Your title suggest that maybe you want to make this more about the bridge rather than the street but here you only used the bridge as a guide. Perhaps a wider angle would be the ticket. It would give you that subject and maintain the flow of the image.
Looking at some of the comments you've received I disagree that this didn't meet the challenge. It's a street scene and despite not having people in it does contain human elements, which is all that is needed for such a challenge. In fact it's better to hint at something than to be obvious about it but for these challenges it's usually best to go with the latter if you want to score better.
That's pretty much it. Keep in mind that this is just my opinion. |
