Hot Shotby bobonacusComment: Cool shot. I'm not crazy about the square crop in this photo since it weakens leading lines and the sense of movement, which this subject could use more of not less.
As for the low votes I would just forget those. If you notice the ribbon winners all filled most of the frame with the challenge theme and little else was included. It's called hitting the voter over the head. If they can only see "hot" AND little else is there to distract their minds then they can't possibly screw up interpreting your photo. You failed to do that here. It's good that you didn't (you're a better overall photographer for that) but bad for your score. I'm sure in your case some voters felt you tried to shoehorn the entry with that clever title. Nevermind that you also included actual fire in the shot but since it doesn't fill 99% of the image area it probably was lost on some. There's also the 'vehicle of destruction' aspect and some probably was offended by your audacity to photograph it. Whatever the reasons I doubt you'll want to alter your approach based on them. Quenching the flames by IreneMComment: You shot for both challenges and entered in this one because of fewer entries right? I'm on to you! :P Congrats Irene. |

Anchor, Buoy, and Chainby bobnospumComment: You showed the challenge theme well but it's not compelling enough and lacks the wow factor. DPC loves extremes whether it be an extreme close up or an extreme grunge effect. Focus on one aspect you think is most important and do everything you can (ex composition, lighting, dof) to enhance it. In this case you could really show off how each of the three weathered differently by going with a closer and tighter crop. Maybe even move the buoy, rope and chain around so that you can get all three in a more pleasing/dynamic arrangement. You had it right in the thread. Keep it simple. |

Purple Doorby jhomrighausComment: I don't know. I think I like the blown out flowers. The image is so odd it belongs in someone's dream. The flowers and the fuzzy green at the top only add to the dreaminess. |

by jdannelsComment: This reminds me of a photo by nixter (I think). Similar in that you've made the shadows the lifeform but different in that the real people are more prominent, which makes it look like they are like tethers connectiing to a greater existence outside of the perceivable 3 dimensions. Then there's that odd sculpture which warps the senses (the 3 holes vs 2 and both instances looking like actual shadows). That just makes it totally alien not to mention the warped POV once you flipped the image. |

Weathered and Beatenby zackdezonComment: Judging by your edit and your title I am going to assume the texture of the rock face is what you found of interest. If so getting closer would have helped here, IMO. By zooming out you make this rock face appear more flat and you lose the sense of the texture and the depth it has. Other than that this is a pretty compent shot. In terms of your PP work I would get ride of those dark halos that your edit produced. If you have photoshop use the stamp tool for this. Just set it to "lighen" mode and then on a duplicate layer sample an area right underneath the dark halo and then paint over it and it should disappear. Just FYI, if you have a white halo you want to remove just change the mode to "darken" instead. Message edited by author 2008-07-29 20:16:44. |
