Rusticby saracatComment: The grass has excellent color and I like the curve of the slope. The building adds a nice off-centered subject. The sky is the exact shade of blue I don't like. The foreground brownish color isn't interesting enough to take up 1/3rd of the picture. I would have walked closer or recomposed for less brown, more green, and used a polarizer for the sky. I guess all that is hard to do at 70MPH. A 5.0 is probably a nice score for a snapshot on this site. (I don't use snapshot here derogitorily, but rather that you literally took no time to set up the picture.) |

African Wildlifeby marcelliebComment: Nice composition, nice separation of subject and background (although a brighter background probably would look better). The biggest problem here is likely the softness of the picture. People on DPC love tack sharp photos. I'm guessing if you were using the sigma at 300 you probably fell victim to the lens a bit. The auto on portrait also may have given you a wide open aperture. That gave the nice blurry background, but also probably cost you some sharpness on the subject. The only other issue is some slight overexposure (not a lot though). Actually, looking at it again, maybe it isn't even overexposed, I might just be getting caught up in the softness. |

Dunesby talmyComment: I like your choice of log as a subject. It looks nice and weathered and contrasty. A few things that make this shot a challenge:
1) It doesn't wow us with either texture or color. The blue of the sky is, to me, my least favorite shade. Evergreens, I have found, are almost impossible to make look good on a picture. I haven't figured that problem out yet myself. Actually, your pine is pretty nice, but the bushes in the background suffer a similar problem, they quickly turn into a greenish/black mush which isn't too fun to look at. The texture is nice in a way, but also the grass gets lost in a mishmash of lines. I bet the grass would actually look fairly nice on a canvas much bigger than 640 px.
2) You have one half of a nice landscape; and it's usually the half people forget, a foreground subject. However, the background (once you remove the log) is fairly nondescript. For the picture to soar we need to grow a mountain or something back there (which of course you can't do). perhaps more sky and some interesting clouds on a different day.
People were pretty tough voting. They wanted a WOW picture and I'm afraid this couldn't deliver those goods.

Blue Belleby gwendyComment: I hate it when a) there is a picture nearly identical to mine and b) it's better. Nice capture of her eyes. I couldn't quite get mine to stand out. 8 |

The Drop Expresses Blueby DAWARComment: Personally I'm getting tired of computer screen shenanigans, but that's just my opinion. A very nicely executed shot. |

Basket of Blueby ElaineComment: Another non-colorcast breath of fresh air. :) I wish the largest spool was the center of focus as it commands a large portion of the picture. It looks like the camera focused on the small light blue spool instead. Composition is otherwise very nice. |

Alternate Realityby fordmanf1Comment: Looks like this was a bit of an extreme crop as the image is fairly soft. Nice idea though and I actually don't mind the huge border (although I bet others will). |

A Single Stitchby kteachComment: Ah, every time I come across a nice shot that hasn't gone wild with the color balance it's like a breath of fresh air. The composition is nice on this with the leading lines. Perhaps a bit too specialized to soar with a wide crowd, but nice. 7 |
