That looks like ragweed pollen under a microscope. Nice abstract and nice blue tones. 7

I think the blue is so saturated you have lost detail. Was a nice setup though.

Why this orientation? I'd like it better vertical.

Well, hmmm, I know you are capable of good stuff. This was your Best of 2005? At first glace, I think this. What is this picture about? Is it about the detail of the butterfly (looks like a butterfly to me, not a moth)? No, we can't see much detail. Is it about the color of the wings with the light through them? No. Is it about the shape? Possibly, but then why the lower framing with the black? The title doesn't direct us, so we are still stuck wondering "what's the point?"

Technically the dust bokeh on the window is distracting, but I bet you didn't really have time to clean it first (assuming the butterfly is alive).

OK, I just peeked down at some comments (just like I say I don't do). It seems like people who liked it like the emotive quality and that's the way you label it. I think that's gonna resonate with some and not with others.

OK, I'm ignoring the horizon, but I feel like I'm on a ship. ;) Biggest thing here is likely that the subject of the challenge, the wildlife, is much darker and less detailed than the rest of the picture. (But I'm sure you knew that). The fence doesn't help, but I don't think it's a huge distraction. Had you a powerful fill flash, I think you could have come up with a nice picture.

I'll give you a short one since 6.16 is a good score. Composition is nicely done and the reflection is a great element. Basically I would like a little fill flash to give more detail to the birds. Otherwise nice image.

A few compositional tips. I think slanted subjects are more appealing to the eye if they slant "into" the picture rather than "out of". With that we need to move the flower to the left. This will do a few things for us. 1) Less bench. It isn't as appealing as the nice green of the grass. 2) No second flower or bush. The plant in the lower right corner distracts without adding additional effect.

If possible, I would have gotten a bit closer so the flower itself is in the top half of the picture instead of the bottom half. Just seems to balance better that way.

Your colors are nice however and the blue/violet contrasts nicely with the green.

EDIT: haha, I see you figured this out all on your own. :)

I think you captured the "3 secs of eternity" well, but there are technical issues with the picture that Doisneau may have been master enough to handle on the fly. The composition is both good and bad. The seat and passenger frame our subject nicely, but they also command a huge portion of the frame without adding anything. The seat is blase and the guy with the jacket is more or less black. Doisneau's The Kiss also managed to transport us to a place where we wanted to be. Look, love springs eternal on the streets of Paris. I want to be there. I'm not quite sure we want to be reading the paper on a commute to that dead-end job. ;)
