Thoughtfullby zaflaboutComment: Technicals: I think I spot a common problem made with portraits, the sharpest focus is on the tip of the nose and not the eyes. Your camera loves to find the nose because it is in the middle and has contrasting edges. You either have to manually focus on the eyes or move the AF sensor to the eyes and recompose. Lighting is nice, although I think the white actually overpowers her a bit. I think I would have cloned out the two little spectral highlights on her lip.
The feel: Contemplative. I like that she isn't looking at the camera. Perhaps a nicely bokeh'd background would have done you better than the starkly white one.
The game: You look like people thought you did a decent job, but didn't provide too much "wow". 101 5s pretty well cinches that diagnosis. |

Wood Carvingby krnodilComment: Technicals: I like the lighting and B&W conversion. The focus is on, but unever. I think your lens is not at a perfect parallel to your object (evidenced by the bottom being more out of focus).
The feel: The grain here seems to be a product of oversharpening which is probably not the best way to go. It does produce noise, but it also gives the picture a harsh feel. I also think shots which rely on detail are not good candidates for image grain. The two wind up competing with each other.
The game: A pretty subtle shot for DPC. A nice capture of the carving lit nicely to show the relief, but my quesiton is "why grain?" This picture doesn't look like it needs it and gives the impression the grain was added to meet the challenge. |

Time And Tide Wait For No Manby idnicComment: I thought about this very title. I love your shot Cindi. Interestingly, I found this about the phrase...
Here tide doesn't refer to the contemporary meaning of the word, i.e. the rising and falling of the sea, but to a period of time. When this phrase was coined tide meant a season, or a time, or a while. The word is still with us in that sense in 'good tidings', which refers to a good event or occasion and whitsuntide, noontide etc. |
