I give a big pat on the back to anyone willing to have a go at doing a self portrait. I've tried it and it's hard! Your smile actually looks very natural here. What comes across is that you're a very friendly, approachable person. Next time I might try for a background that is more consistently toned, and either lighter than your hair color or backlighted so that the details aren't lost.

It'll be six years from now that I'll be getting ready to send my daughter off to college, but I know those six years are going to fly by because the last six certainly did. This is a nice closeup portrait of your son. I might dodge the highlights and midtones in his eyes just a bit to make them shine, and perhaps desaturate the reds overall to reduce the pink tones. Make sure you snap lots more shots of him before he leaves. :)
