I like the colours and the shapes, but I don't get how it fits the brief.

I like the colours a lot.
It has that poster feel about it.
The shore line on the far side is nice and level too.
Good luck!

No Where To Go

I like what you were trying to do with this one.
I am a big fan of narrow dof, but in this case, having lost focus on the pieces in the foreground, you've over-exposed the piece in the background, and left the viewer with nothing much to focus on, if you'll pardon the pun.
The remaining highlights in this image (white squares and black piece light reflections) are too dark, and too close to the shadow levels to provide any real contrast or "pop", to the photo.
So, in all, it comes across as flat with no real attention grabber.
It was a well thought out idea lacking some technical finishing.
Better luck next time!

You, my friend, are not well...
Pity about the unneccesary detail in the background.

There are those who will give you grief over your narrow dof.
They can go and get knotted.
The viewer's attention is held by the head of the insect and the shapes sticking out of the flower (whatever the technical terms may be..).
The softened detail smoothly rounds out the picture, without interfering with what matters.
In all, you've succeeded in painting a beautiful picture with colours and shapes, while saying what needed to be said with this outstanding photo.
Good luck!
*10*
(And I really do mean knotted...)

This is a nice usage of a wide angle lens, with a good choice of composition and time of day for taking the shot.
Your colours are vivid and everything is in focus, as this shot demands.
The curving horizon would be my one complaint - ironically.

This is one of those shots which is just begging for a Joey Lawrence grungification! It has all the colour and the depth to make a masterpiece of his technique out of.
You should PM him and see if he'd be keen...
I for one would love to see the end result of that.

I think you have a really nice photo here.
This would make any mommy or daddy real proud!
On a technical note, I would go for a flatter crop in order to emphasise a wider angle, and to give flow to the direction he's looking in.
Good luck!

Pity about all those reflections...
I can see you, and your lighting equipment
And your tripod, I think.
