Hockey's Biggest Fansby cheegirlComment: ::: Critique Club ::: ladyhawk22
First Impression - the most important one: What a cutie!! Great expression on the face.
Composition: I like the composition of this shot a lot. Having the "empty" space to the right really gives the feeling that she is watching something offscreen. And having the shot done in profile makes it seem as though we are peeking into her life.
Subject: Good choice of subject. As I said, great look on the face and such a little cutie! Good colors as well, which help add some interest.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light): Colors in this shot look good, especially the reds. Nice and clean. Focus is spot on! Though I think I might suggest a slightly less shallow DOF for this challenge. I can definitely see that there is *something* in the background, but it's hard to tell what it is. This gives the impression that she's not Singled Out, merely that she's the whole photo. Lighting looks really good.
To grow its vote?: I think it may have helped voters to see a little more of what was going on behind the girl...giving her a stronger sense of being Singled Out.
Summary: Great technical aspects in this shot! Very well done and an adorable subject to boot! |

Girl in pinkby ergoComment: ::: Critique Club ::: ladyhawk22
First Impression - the most important one: Great use of DOF and a very good shot!
Composition: Composition of this shot is great. The other people in the photo really help frame the main subject.
Subject: Great choice of subject. The bright clothes mixed with the dark hair really make the subject stand out. Certainly makes for an interesting and captivating image.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light): DOF on this shot is wonderful! Just what I envisioned for this challenge. The colors look good, though it seems to me that there's a slight yellow/green cast in the lighting...though that could be the surroundings. I think the pink makes my brain want to see cool colors as opposed to warm tones (silly brain!) :-) Lighting looks good to me!
To grow its vote?: From the other comments on the photo I think that a slightly different color cast may have improved the vote on this shot. Other than that, I really wouldn't change a thing!
Summary: Very stunning photo and an excellent choice for this challenge! Well done. |

Peek-a-boo!by jmleliiComment: ::: Critique Club ::: ladyhawk22
First Impression - the most important one: Good angle/perspective on this shot and I like the B&W tones.
Composition: Composition is a good element in this photo. I like the lines that are created by the sheep and I especially like how only one sheep has his head to the camera. And it looks like he's staring right at you!
Subject: I like the subject for this shot, though I'm sure you probably took a few hits for it not being a person, as was stated in the challenge description. These animals make a neat study in texture, especially the texture of the one up front as compared to those farther back.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light): Again, I like the B&W tones in this photo...I think they work well here. The focus does seem to be a tad bit off. The interesting textures would be picked up more with a sharper focus. The lighting enhances the feel of this photo as well. The interplay of shadow and light, between the sheep and the spaces between them, comes off very well due to the lighting.
To grow its vote?: There are two things which likely affected voting on this photo. The first being that the challenge description specifically stated people....nuff said on that. My second guess would be that the description also mentioned using shallow DOF to create the Singled Out effect. In this photo the one sheep seems Singled Out due to the fact that it's the only one looking at you.
Summary: A very nice photo that I enjoyed! There were a couple of aspects that led to it not fitting certain challenge description areas, but it also has many good things going for it! |

Ohio U Mascotby docurrieComment: ::: Critique Club ::: ladyhawk22
First Impression - the most important one: My first impression is that this is just such a cute photo!!
Composition: I think that the composition of this shot is good. Especially for this challenge, having the wall behind the boy and mascot, between them and the crowd, helps to give the impression of Singled Out.
Subject: You've chosen a nice subject for this shot. It sounds odd to say that there appears to be an expression on the mascot's face :-) But it really looks that way to me. The subject is interesting and definitely unique.
Technical (Colour, focus, and light): Color and light look really good! Focus looks good as well. The technical aspects of this shot are all looking good to me :-)
To grow its vote?: I imagine that this photo definitely spoke to the group of voters that appreciates sporting events. I think that many of us remember being that age and how excited we would have been to get that kind of attention from the mascot! However, there may have been some voters who didn't emotionally identify with the scene or may prefer something more "artsy". For me, I really like this candid, slice of life shot.
Summary: A good shot with good technical aspects. A very touching scene and the depth of field works very well for this challenge. |
