I think you executed this very well. The technicals are extremely good - lots of stuff I'd never think of to do to a picture, and it all hangs together well and doesn't look processed (that's the trick, I think.) My favorite part of the composition is not the watch, it's your wife's foot for some odd reason. I like the slight lighter section of the headstone near the boy's head, too. All told, this should well have been a 6 score, but I suspect the "does not meet challenge" came into play here. Maybe more "grief" or "sadness" than "desolation". On an unrelated to score note, I do wonder about setting up children for shots like this - isn't that a bit weird? Hopefully he understands it's just because his daddy has this obsession... :-) (Sue me, I can't type or spell...)

This, my dear, is simply a wonderful picture. The desat treatment works well, but the key here is simply the timing - the capture of their faces at this moment. Very well done, and worth way more than a steenkin' ribbon or average score.

This feels very desolate! Definitely works well in B&W. The color version is kinda cool, too, but this is definitely more suited to the challenge. I like overall composition - can't see anything I'd change on it. Technically I suppose some might want it a bit sharper, but I like it soft - gives it a dreary feel, which is pretty much what I think you were after. Really should have scored higher.

First, I've gotta say I love reading your comments on your photographs. I commented on this during the challenge - like the idea and the composition but am not thrilled with the processing. That said, without the processing I suspect it wouldn't have been as interesting a picture, because it is interesting - makes you stop and look. I think you came pretty close to achieving what you set out to do, and that's a good thing!

I remember commenting on this one during the challenge. You may want to try burning the background to darken it, make it recede a bit. This shot might also be more interesting taken from a lower level, maybe a bit closer to the splintered wood to get more of that texture. As shot, you do tend to lose the separation of the subject from the busy and similarly colored background.

I thought I recognized that elephant, or at least that wall behind the elephant. I really like the processing you used here. I happen to know that it's tough to get contrast on these gals in the setting they have them and you did a very nice job dealing with that situation!
