Greetings from the Critique Club

My first impression - yowza, that's bright! I'd have guessed this was taken outdoors but checking the info it's a studio shot - nice job recreating a bright afternoon in the studio. I do like the contrasts/similarities in the textures of the leaf and the paper, but my favorite part is the very definite shadow. The dark veins in the leaf are quite intriguing as well - makes it seem as though the leaf has actual blood running in them.

Composition overall is good - simple but effective. What may have hurt your score, other than some simply finding it too bright, is texture studies tend to be just that - overall studies of texture with no particular focus. To some this may be disconcerting - they want somewhere specific for their eyes to go.

Greetings from the Critique Club

This is a very nice pet portrait - one I'm sure your sister would love to have printed and framed. Nice job with the new camera - very good focus which can be hard with animal hair. Post processing is such that it doesn't look "processed" which to me is good for shots like this. What I like best of all about it is the crop - some may think it's too tight, but I think good close crops of animals show a bit more of their personality.

What could make it better? Maybe a bit more light in the eye, perhaps. I don't know that an animal portrait with no action or real "story" will score really high in a Free Study - too much for voters to choose from and some things just get overlooked. It did obvsiously strike a chord with your commenters, though, who seemed to like it quite a bit!

The shot that currently is your highest scoring, for example, has a "story" and a feel to it that voters will respond to more often. That doesn't mean that very good shots of animals, like this one, aren't "good" - just that they may not score as high in a Free Study.

Hope that makes sense! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

LOVE the eyes in this. Very nicely shot and processed. The gaze is quite intent - the crop emphasizes this.

Greetings from the Critique Club

This is an intriguing and beautiful sculpture - I've seen it in many challenge entries in many different lights and angles. This is the first time I've seen it from this angle, though. You've captured a pleasing repetition of the sculpture's upward curves in the faint traces of clouds in the sky. The warmth and angle of the setting sun give a nice glow to the work, which is nicely seen in the reflections.

Post processing is simple and subtle, and in my opinion effective and not overdone. This is a nice quiet study of shape and light.
