I just read through all your comments - it seems to me that the really interesting, really good shots inspire comments both strongly positive and strongly negative - you get reactions. This is a fine shot - strong diagonal, good tonality, but what it really has going with it is "reaction" - it makes people stop, look, and think about it.

I'm partial, because I think he's a darn cute kid and he has the most gorgeous eyes. Good even lighting on his face, nice catchlights and pretty good B&W conversion. I really like the choice of dark clothing and a dark background - highlights your subject very well.

I like the innocence of this. From a photography perspective, the light is nice and even and focus is very good. The composition/crop feels a bit off-balanced to me - between the composition and the angle the picture is taken at, the focus of the shot seems to be the nose and I'd prefer it to be the eyes. Hopefully this makes sense.

Great tones in this Julianne, and I quite like the duplicity of the shadow. Makes for a very interesting and well-balanced composition. Also didn't hurt that you selected a very lovely model for this! Score sucks; picture most certainly does not.

Is this you? This is a way cool shot. I have that same problem with cats getting in the way, but I figure they're there for a reason. Besides, adds an interesting touch to this. I quite like it, actually. Quite like it a lot.

What a delightful couple! Thanks for sharing their story, and I bet they're quite happy with this. As for the editing - the background seems too something... bright/harsh maybe? Something that gives the photo more depth might be more appropriate. Check with some of the portrait "pros" like Louis for ideas.

Black and White

Black and White

I wouldn't have considered it DNMC but I'd have preferred it to be either shot in or processed to Black and White as most photogs understand the term. And that's mostly because I prefer darn near everything in B&W most days. I figure you knew exactly what you were doing with this shot - by that I mean entering a color photography showing black and white. (There was a challenge a while back called "black and white in color" for which this would have been quite appropriate.)

As a portrait - the gentleman in the photograph has character and draws my interest for that reason. The lighting is a bit harsh and didn't quite make it to his eyes, which is one thing I do like to see in portraits - eyes. (They're the window to the soul and all that.) The red of the background is nice to add color, complementing your subject well, but I'm not fond of the wooden thingamabobs - a smooth texture would probably be better. It's a good picture, much better than a simple snapshot, but not a "great" portrait. I'd suggest you shoot this gentleman again - he's a terrific subject.

But what do I know? You're up to 63 comments and two favs! And you have a ribbon!

What I find kind of striking about this (other than the sentiments expressed of course) is the complete lack of people. It makes it very bleak - which is entirely appropriate.

Wow. Look who's kicking butt with new lights! This is a very hot shot. And I mean hot. It sizzles. The lighting and detail in her hair really adds a lot, too. Very nice work, Erick!
