This is a unique piece to photograph. The detail in the lace is very good and I like the overall positioning of the doll. From the lighting it seems like you were using natural window light? A little bit of glare on the reflective surfaces...consider using a circular polarizer; it would allow you to knock down those reflections considerably.

Bummer about only getting 1 comment on this. Guess that happens too frequently with the larger Free Study challenges. Personally I gave this a 6 during the challenge. Revisiting this now I wonder why I didn't give it a 7? Hmmm...could be that the bar is raised somewhat for FS challenges? Not enough time to get thru 450+ images? Not sure...

Anyway - I am enjoying this photo once again. Having some time to spend with it I'm finding it not only well shot, but engaging as well. The expression; I wonder what she's thinking? She's not really smiling, not afraid or overwhelmed...inquisitive perhaps? Oh, wait - you said "Observant" with your title. That's actually right on the mark. :-)

As for the focus, lighting, and technicals, it's all good. The DOF and focal point are right on the mark; her eye's are sharp which is key, additionally her nose and going over to her hand - sharp as well.

The arm and hand lend themselves well to the comp with the direction of her gaze and the proper amount of room to the right for the viewer to engage.

I like it. Well done!

That's a cool looking duck. What kind is it? I've not seen one with a bill that long.

As for the photo - a little more room to the left would help the composition some IMO. On the monitor I'm using the whites look somewhat overexposed. Looks like you stopped motion and kept it sharp.

Good luck in the challenge.

Don't know if you noticed this or not, but at the base of the mountains the snow/ground fans out and has a V shaped crevice above it. Kind of mirrors the snow angel in a way.

Clever, creative, good use of a stunning background to positive effect. 10 from me - see you on the front page. Congrats!

Photographically - technically and in terms of visual impact it is pretty amazing but I feel I just can't condone what I'm seeing. ...

My thoughts exactly.

Agreed.

As a dad I can certainly appreciate the connection to "Puzzled". I enjoy the processing approach you took with this. Overall, well done and somewhat undervalued in the challenged IMHO.
