It is sad. I had a similar apple tree right outside my office door in my back yard and a storm came through a few years back and just toppled it. I never dug out the stump which was laid over on its side and it has since started growing branches straight up out of the side of the stump.

It is an interesting texture - at first I thought it was dirt.
