In cases like this a graduated ND filter could help.
I find this photograph well succeeded considering the circumstances.

There are some beautiful things to see on our planet. Some of them remain, others are just passing by. This simple beach scenery is one of them.

I'm not too sure about the flip, but this is only my personal taste.
Shame about the noise, which is too strongly present.

The photograph is well composed, nicely balanced. Colours are very nice. In no way there's something negative to say upon this photograph. Maybe people don't really see mushrooms as Zen. But then, Zen is not a subject, but a state of mind, being.
I think that, the moment you took this photograph, you felt Zen because of the calmness, the peace, the odour of nature.

I just don't get it. I mean, I don't get how this didn't score any higher.
The simplicity, the reflection, the gradient: al these elements are contributing to the calmness in this photograph. Looking at it, my eyes go from top left to bottom right to find a place to rest on. This is the reed with the most sharpness and is the resting place for the eye. The fact that the other reeds are not as sharp, gives that part of the photograph calmness.

I'm glad to able to tell that I gave one of the 2 9-scores.
