Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge

Welcome to DPC Patrick and what a commendable start. These lovely flowers are a welcome sign of spring thus fulfilling the challenge brief. I like your shallow DOF that accurately portrays the single flower against the foreground and background of soft focus repetition of blooms, nicely and creatively done. The distant blue contrasts nicely too and the lighting highlights on the flower give it an additional glowing appeal. Thanks for your entry

An image that meets the challenge

The presence of so many lambs is certainly indicative of a springtime scene which fulfils the challenge brief. I like the shapes and contrasts of the landscape it adds nicely to the overall result, but the lighting leaves a bit to be desired perhaps earlier or later with longer shadows would have enhanced it some. Thanks for your entry Jonathon

An image that meets the challenge

These lovely flowers certainly suggest spring has definitely sprungâ€Â¦ Whilst the emphasis is certainly on the attractive springtime flowers it lacks a strong focal point. I see this is your first use of this lovely wide angle lens so its all part of the learning curve but I hope you will soon explore the creative potential of the lens. You can get amazingly close and anything close to the lens gets exaggerated so if you had gone in close on one of these flowers it would have formed a very strong focal point and improved the image enormously. Also I see you have used f22 and with that shutter speed presumably a tripod? An aperture of about f8 would have given you sufficient DOF and enabled you to hand hold it. I hope you enjoy using and discovering the creative potential in your lens Susie, thanks for your entry

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge

Ah, a welcome return to these fascinating birds, I do love these owls, its especially nice to see the young too. Your composition is very effective, I love the way all the young are posing directly at the camera, you̢۪ve got them well trained! I see from the DOF and the aperture that you were at the higher end of your lens, just as well you didn̢۪t have to get too close. The only thing that mars it for me is that the grass feels over saturated. Anyway, congratulations on the ribbon, a lovely image Janine.

I agree with your commenters this is the best of the three light painting shots, well done Ronnie. The light painting itself is the most interesting of the three and the lighting on your model is also most effective. A very nice result, your perseverance has paid dividends, well done

A great image Marcel. I like your exposure that concentrates on the view through the window, what a great view. The inclusion of your colleague as a silhouette really completes the image making it work well. The composition is good but I think it would improve it to exclude the building on the left and perhaps crop the right to match the left.

AS your commenters have noted a very cute image and more interesting in that it is not a ‘normal’ type of pose which is good. Whilst I do like the unusual approach the hands do feel rather dominant as though they are pinning the cat down to submission, I know this is not the case but that is the impression, for me at least. I do like the eye contact it is very strong and with the shallow DOF even more emphasised. All in all a good attempt at a different animal portrait, well done Marcel.

An image that does not meet the challenge

In so far as it goes you do have focus from foreground to the hut so in that respect it partially meets the challenge Marcel but I don̢۪t think you have chosen the best subject for the challenge because this is not at all challenging in respect of a deep DOF. The emphasis for a successful entry must be on a DEEP DOF this choice of subject is in no way deep. The bland uninteresting sky actually serves a purpose in isolating the hut from the world around it so it is effective in creating a different look to your image but again this is not really the purpose of this challenge. A look at the front page will probably explain better than I am what was expected for the challenge and I̢۪m sure you will agree that your image differs significantly in this respect?

Well done Janine, a great result for a great image, well deserved. What a great choice of subject for the challenge and very well executed too. Its inevitable that in this sort of difficult exposure you will get some blown highlights from the brightest parts but you have controlled it all well, the all-important interior is very well exposed. Lighthouses are fascinating structures and this is no exception a lovely building. I like Art’s comment about the sign! So, what does it sayâ€Â¦?

An appealing image that meets the challenge

To be honest, I think this is quite an open challenge in that I find it difficult to define a style for Melethia's photography so with that in mind I could imagine her taking such an image. The image itself is very pleasing, your low-level viewpoint gives an interesting perspective especially given the reflective nature of the floor. I like the mono presentation, though I think there is scope for a little more contrast. This is one of those scenes that would lend itself well to perfect symmetry though I don't have a problem with this composition. I've only just noticed Melethia's comment so, well done Marcel!
