Hello from the critique club

An interesting image that meets the challenge well

Well done Marcel for finding a very appropriate subject for the challenge, he̢۪s obviously very confident working without any gloved protection! The subject is interesting but the pose is less so with the beekeepers hat competing with the main subject, the bees. I think you would have done much better to take the shot from a low angle with the lid and bees in the immediate foreground looking up towards his soft focus face with the bees sharply focussed and clearly the main subject.

Well, Susan I really don't know what has happened here but I posted a critique for this several days ago! To recap, your processing and composition are very effective. I like the softer focus gemstone background it helps define you well. The one thing that doesn't work so well is the far background the highlights are somewhat distracting. BTW, your pose looks very professional well done.

An appealing image that meets the challenge well

Well you̢۪ve certainly found an appropriate subject and what a lot of them there are! I think your DOF needed to be one or the other either completely in focus front to back or prefereably those interesting shoes in front of the pumps brought into sharp focus against a sea of OOF shoes to isolate it distinctively from the others. Thanks for an interesting entry K.

An appealing image that meets the challenge well

An accomplished portrait of a lovely model, she has a very appealing look about her. The colours fill the challenge brief well. The lighting is just a tad bright on her forehead above the mask and could benefit from a little dodging to reduce its intensity, apart from that its all very appealing well done Robert.

I like your creative approach here, it shows originality. Unlike your commenter I think your ship is in focus in the right places but perhaps the DOF is just a tad on the shallow side, having said that the sail is nicely sharp against the soft focus background so it helps define the boat more effectively. I was thinking perhaps the exposure could be a 1/3 stop less to reduce the brightness of the highlights but this would affect your boat which is nice and bright, I would say you̢۪ve got it right. Thanks for such an original entry Fabio, keep up the good work.

Well, its certainly purple! Your composition is good placing the spider on an appropriate hotspot but I̢۪m afraid I̢۪m one of those who dislike the processing. In a way I like it because it makes the spider less obvious and you have to search more for it but it just feels too much, a bit overdone. I supose its the sort of effect you either like or you don̢۪t. Thanks for a different and stimulating entry Susie.

An appealing image that meets the challenge

Those lovely northern lights never fail to impress and appeal to all the voters here. I like your composition, the diagonal works well. I suppose in terms of the challenge brief the purples are a little on the subtle side with the green of the aurora obviously dominating. Its good to include yourself to give a sense of scale and human presence. Well di=one for your high score and placement Benedikt.

This is a very accomplished floral study that fully justifies its high score and placement, well done Janine. The colours are all very subtle meeting the challenge brief fully whilst the focus and DOF is absolutely perfect for those lovely crisp edges together with an inner softness that serves to emphasise the purple tinged petals really well. The composition is spot on, they don̢۪t call them hotspots for nothing! It takes a really special floral image to get me excited, this excites me...

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge

This is a nice documentary style shot of these lovely animals going about their everyday activities. We don't have many of these over here in England, I don't suppose you were in any danger but the one looking at you looks a bit mean! They form a nice trio from the lovely large one feeding to the one on the left whilst grooming still has her eye on you. I'm sure you're right about the snow, I for one, wouldn't have realised there is snow on the ground, as you say, well spotted Annie. Thanks for your entry Janine.

What a gorgeous beast! A lovely 'in yer face' portrait of a lovely animal, good focus on the eyes and good DOF to get the muzzle nicely focused too. I see you're definitely in high-key mode with your recent entries, whilst it serves to create a more unique image I feel its just borderline slightly overexposed, there is some loss of detail in the whites around the muzzle and his flanks below. Perhaps I'm being over-critical but for me blown highlights are something to be avoided at all costs. Having said that I love the detail in his fur especially around the top of the head and ears it makes him look so adorable. This brings back fond memories of a similar shot I took a long time ago and she has since become my avatar. Anyway, congratulations on the high score and HM, well done Susan.
