there looks to be some potential here, but, as rendered, i'm having a hard time working through it. i think it's just a bit too contrasty. your darks are really dark, and the horse isn't sharp enough. i don't know if this is due to the way you processed it or the way you shot it. either way, it does have something about it that gets your attention, but after the initial reaction, there's not much there to keep the attention.

i'm sure the title means something, but an not quite sure how to relate it to the image. the image itself looks to have potential, but i think the processing has been pushed a bit too far. as is, i'm not finding much to connect with.

i think i see what you're after, but don't think you got quite enough detail and/or outline along the left of the subject to really bring it out. there's just not enough there to keep me engaged.

A Desert Place

this looks like a beatiful place. in a strange way, though, the lighting gives it the feel of being an artificial set--like a museum display with a painted backdrop. i like the composition and subject matter, but it feels just a bit too sterile for me to connect with it emotionally.

ok, what image says to me is that somebody let you take their picture, but was not exactly thrilled with it, leaving you with an image that documents that you were out in a field. basically, it comes across as a bad snapshot taken with a good camera. but, with just a little tuning, though, you could turn this opportunity to your advantage--in the future. rather than shooting dead-on, simply lock your focus, and turn the camera to the right or left, capturning an interesting part of the background, as well. or, change your perspective dramatically. ask your subject to knell so that you can tower over them, or, throw yourself on the ground and shoot up at them. the point is, don't just shoot straight. have fun with your camera. learn to see beyond what is simply right in front of you. and, if shooting people, work with them so that they are having fun, and not just feeling that you are pointing a camera straight at them. and, as for challenges, keep in mind, you need to engage the viewers with something that will keep their interest and not give them reasons to simply blow by your entry. from the looks of things here, if you had waited just a bit, until the sun was starting to set, you could have used a fill flash to capture your subject, as well as some pretty dramatic skies. hope this helps some, good luck in the future!

Bamboo Leaves

while this subject does have potential, it does need a little tuning. the harsh light has washed out most of the details in the leaves. as a rule centered subjects really need to command the image; here, the background is in direct competition with the subject--there's too much background and not enough subject. from a challenge standpoint, you would want your images to capture and keep the viewers attention. here, the technical deficiencies make this easy to blow by. but, even if the image was corrected for those, you would still be faced with the prospect of an image that is a bit less than compelling. before you submit to a challenge, ask yourself, \"is this something i personally would want to be my pc's wallpaper for the next week?\" ask yourself, \"does this image really rock me, or am i just entering to have something in the challenge?\" it's one thing to be looking to improve your photography, it's a different thing to be looking to improve your ability to compete in challenges. if you are a member, use the portfolio space to get comments and to make improvements. trying to do it soley through challenges puts you in a position of not necessarily getting enough comments to really help improve in either way. hope this helps some, good luck in the future!

very nicely seen, jon. while i would have liked to have seen this finish higher, my guess is that this is one of those images that most people would prefer not to dwell on.
