definitely a better graphic than the other photo. you might want to take a look at this either from a higher and lower perspective, rather than just shooting straight down the top of the hull. it might be stronger if shot a bit from above, with fishing gear, etc, inside the boat.

4 - play! immediately recognizable! fits the bill!

what to do differently if you have more time: look at it like this: you got a usable shot; what other things could you do to make it even more dynamic? shoot from a lower perspective, maybe even with the camera on the ground. try (this may or may not work) seeing what would happen if you silhouetted a child in the sprinkler where the photo primarily consists of sky, water, and child(ren). [hmm, maybe an idea for the silhouette challenge here...]

what to do differently if you have more time: shoot tighter, and maybe opt for something less of a photograph and more of a graphic. when printed small, a lot of the detail that makes this a great photo will be lost. you almost have to think of it the way the thumbnails seem to show one thing, but the full image shows something much different. here, you need to hit the happy medium where the thumbnail and the actual pretty much say the same thing. all the same, this would be a useable image.
