I think the classic feel comes from the clouds, sounds odd I suppose, as I know you are a people photographer but I read somewhere you were trying to find classic views of NYC and this fits the bill.

I often use spot metering if I am not going to look, it will get the focus atleast metered right, you just have to hit the focus on something. Also I will just aim the camera at a group of people and meter the way I want it to look. If you keep the light coming from the same direction you can get very expected results. Sometimes too, I aim the camera at the sky and lock the exposure, many places will then be dark when you are walking around. Then I for people walking in the sun or out of the shade and shoot them, this can give very dramatic results.

Perhaps a not so tight crop to get more of her surroundings. I think it would be more interesting to have point of reference she is in the middle of the street.

The strong light really suits these two. Interesting too, because usually the tell the story, but here they are darkened but the wrinkles on their face keep the connection.
