The Violinistby gsalComment: It doesn't look like much of a portrait ... but man, it's an AWESOME candid! I love how she stands out in the crowd due to the colors and the DOF. |

Portrait of a Sunflowerby SnakeComment: So, let's assume everyone on DPC thinks outside the box and decides to vote a 10 on this image. Wouldn't it look kind of funny to any DPC visitors coming to the site for the first time ... seeing a blue-ribbon winning sun flower in the Portrait challenge?
I just don't think the "world at large" could even appreciate the box that is being stepped out of. Portraits are, to most people everywhere, images of people and perhaps sometimes animals (as portraits tend to focus on the face, some animals might fit people's definitions for portraits).
But I just don't see anyone confusing this image for a portrait without reading your title to make thing think of it. |

The Bird Vendorby namastedcComment: In a "portrait", I would expect the person to be the strongest element in the image (the biggest, the sharpest, the most detailed). Instead, I'm looking at a bunch of sharply focused red boxes and I can't even tell what is inside of them (other than your title which alludes to the possibility that they might be birds). Meanwhile, the girl on the left is out of focus and is clearly not the "vendor" alluded to by the title, so all that's left is the hand on the right ... ah, that's it, that must be the vendor. But is that all I get for a portrait? A hand? |

Riversideby lifeguard247Comment: Oops... forgot to put the person in the portrait. (I bet you've received too many comments to that effect already, so just ignore this one and carry on) |

American Beautyby albc28Comment: I dunno... I want to like this one, but the lighting just seems so harsh. From the dark (almost in shadow) legs, to the bright tummy, to her super bright right arm (left side of image) and back to her face being so much darker than her tummy.
The question is... what is the important thing for us to look at here? Is it her stomach? Her right arm? The eye is naturally drawn to the brightest part of the image and for that reason, I think you've missed the mark on your lighting.
I also think the image would have been ever so much more powerful if her eyes connected with the viewer by looking right into the camera. But to that end, you would need to rotate her body because looking down her nose at the camera it would shut her eyes and reduce the impact. The greatest impact with eyes comes when you can see a lot of white around the eyes. That happens from a side ways glance, or an upwards glance.
The girl, however, is cute and I hope you'll show her again in future challenges. |

The Potterby ZoomdakComment: The round blue thing behind his arm appears to be in sharper focus than his face... I wonder if the focus was missed? I really like to see sharp focus on the face in a portrait, most essentially the eyes, but in this case (given the equal distance of all of his features) his entire face should be in focus. |

Reflectionsby elsapoComment: LOVELY image! Love the light. Love the pose. Love the "extras" ... the jewelry hanging out of the jewelry box, the fan, the necklace, the lace. BEAUTIFUL model. Well done! |
