There are two flashes involved, but the 580 on camera is actually pointing to the left to fire the slave I had on a stand over there. So mostly this is just a balance between natural light and the slave.

Without any kind of flash/fill light I would have blown the highlights in the background by trying to keep her light enough. And had I used on-camera flash it would have simply flattened her form and left the image looking like a snapshot (like the one her mom probably got as she was standing beside me taking pictures at the same time).
