Wow. I am so pleased to have the opportunity to look at this fascinating image one more time. Of course it is beautiful and you were well rewarded by our voters for your efforts.

There's not much I can add to those comments you have already received, so I'll just say "thanks, again" and move on to the next person in line for a Critique.

Still, (as an avid SciFi reader) it was a pleasure to examine this image so -er - closely. I can almost find the Heinlein homesteads on the topo you have provided.

Hello, Tony. This is your week to be critiqued by SFAlice, I guess. You hve a lovely image here and you were well rewarded by our voters. It's an equisite sunrise with glorious colors. You made the most of them. Your horizon's straight (I checked) and your composition is lovely. Technicals, so far as I can tell, are fine.

You've made this Critique easy. It's a good image and you should be very, very happy with it. Perhaps it didn't have the extra sparkle that earns you a spot on the front page, but it, in it's own way, is lovely.

Keep up the good work.

Well, Tofarley, it looks as if this is your week to be Critiqued by SFAlice. I see I just did your nice Candlelight Romance entry.

This one is a different mood entirely. It's humerous and technically good. (The more I see of the S2 IS at work,the more I like it.) Composition is good.

The voters generally liked it and you received a pretty good score. I guess your very nice image just didn't have that extra something that voters tend to reward so highly.

I wish you continued enjoyment in your DPC experience.

And I do hope you find our comments helpful.

RAILWAY BRIDGE.

This image is peaceful and quiet. I like the composition very much and the light on the pond is beautiful. Because it is backlit, it is difficult to make out the railway bridge and while I think I see that there is actually a train on it, as a title, it is just a little obscure.

I would suggest a couple of ways to retake this image. First, if you do try again, consider bracketing your shots. In this instance, definitely under-expose to see if that would give you a better image. I would also experiment with your ISO. It may be that an ISO of 100 would do the job well here.

The final suggestion I would make would be to try to use the full amount of pixels DPC allows. This image comes across as a bit small but in DPC you have 640 pixels on the longest side as well as the 150mb file size. You might try to take full advantage of those pixels.

Congratulations for getting up so early to take this pretty shot. I wish you luck in future Challenges.

Aha! Now it's your turn! Hello,Rikki.

Your image. I like the controlled patterns you made of the stamps marching across the page and the colors are good. The pun's cute but would have been more readily apparent to our hurried voters if the 'dew' had been more visible. Obviously, you don't want to water the stamps too much, but perhaps a piece of plastic protecting the stamps might work. (Avoiding reflections, of course)

The only other thing I would suggest, Rikki, is to be sure your image is as sharp as it can be. I know it's tempting to just get up close and shoot, but especially with items that have sharp edges and printing, the extra stability of a tripod comes in very handy. (This from a gal who hates tripods.)

You're doing fine, and certainly your participation in the forums makes a DPC day brighter.

You have created a cute, simple image that works well for the Challenge. You did a good job of toning down the shadows which could have been overwhelming in this image. I like how you used the yellow background, carefully bending it so there is a continuous flow of color. I would suggest that the yellow of the background and the yellow of the cheese seem to be (er) at war with each other and the result is not as pleasing as it could be. But, by all means, keep using vivid colors. They can be really exciting and unique.

And it has been my (personal) experience that toy figures do not do well in DP Challenges. While your choice of elements is up to you, this is something you might want to take into consideration for higher scores.

Finally, there is a little halo around the gouda cheese which sometimes suggests oversharpening. You don't mention sharpening in your workflow, but it is something to watch.

I wish you continued success in DPC and look forward to seeing more of your images.

This image certainly does meet the Challenge and you were well recognized for that. Cute dogs and there's the cheese!

I like the red background but would make just one suggestion. If you could find a drape of a similar material to use instead of the sofa cushions, it would make this image look much more professional.

Then, while those dogs do pose very nicely, if you could get them to be both interested in the cheese and show off more of their cute faces, it would be another plus.

Finally, in composition, you have cropped off just a little of the dog on the right's tail. It is usually best to either have the full figure of a model, or else a deliberate crop that shows off some feature, like a face. (I can see this as a cropped pic with just both dog's heads concentrated on the cheese, for example.)

I've enjoyed the opportunity to look at this cute image again. I wish you the best of luck in future DPC Challenges.

Hello. Congratulations on your ribbon. You have received many comments on your image and many of your commentors can give you better technical advice than I can, so I will not attempt to do so here.

Oddly enough (and as I mentioned in a thread somewhere relating to this image) birds do fly at night, especially large birds during the migratory seasons. The heat of the sun would dehydrate the birds quickly and they could not travel the long miles they do if they attempted to migrate during the daylight.

Anyhow, this is a competent and compelling image and you were nicely rewarded for it.

Hello. This is your first Challenge and you have done well. You have a strong image here and one that, in my opinion, meets the Challenge well. It is well photographed, for the most part, and the composition is beautiful. And you have an understanding mother to allow you to photograph her at such an early hour of the day.

I think you know the area around the model's nose is 'hot' but you couldn't do much about it with Basic Editing. The remainder of the technicals, to me, are just fine.

For some reason - and it happens - our voters sometimes overlook a good image. I think they did so with this one.
