Yes, next time feel better and join the crowd.

Love your lighting in your Shadow entry. It's always good to leave a little mystery in the picture and you certainly did that with your lighting and your subject matter. Technicals are good, I think, and the composition works well. I can only think that the subject matter brought your score down a bit. The implication of 'cutting' or 'self-inflicted wounds" is a frightening one to many people.
Still you did get a fairly good score, probably because no one could argue with the fact that you certainly met the Challenge, head on. Perhaps a less dark (no pun intended) subject next time will bring a better score your way. You have the technical skill.
I'll look forward to seeing more of your work on DPC.

Welcome to DPC! I see this is just your second Challenge and I'll bet you're having fun setting up your shots.
In an abstract sort of way, your Shadows image has merit, but I'm afraid for DPC purposes, it didn't measure up too well. But look at it this way, Gaupi. You have no place to go but up from here on. (joking)
The odd angle and the colors - probably produced by the indoor lighting and high ISO - just pulled this image down in the ratings. My suggestions for improvement might include bracketing your shots and selecting different angles to see which might be most pleasing.
My best advice is to just keep shooting and getting more practice. Soon you'll be up there with the best of 'em.
I'll look forward to seeing more of your work on DPC.

Welcome to the world of DPC! I see you've been a member just over a month now, and have done very well in that time. And I enjoyed wandering through your portfolio just now.
You have an image here that meets the Challenge well and the score shows that. When I first saw the image, I thought, oh, oh, vignetting. However, your photographer's comments tell me this was deliberate. If there was a good strong reason for the vignetting I think it might have been more interesting; as it is, perhaps others also thought it was a 'mistake'. Then, your commentors suggested that while your image did meet the Challenge, the composition isn't very exciting. Unfortunately, they have a point. The hand, pointing, just isn't very strong all by itself. Maybe if it was pointing at something, or making one of those puppet hand gestures???
What you do have here is something it takes many people a long time to find, and that is simplicity. You took something down to the essence and worked with it. Many spend a long time learning that bit of wisdom.
I'll look forward to seeing more of your work here on DPC. Good luck!

I see that everytime you enter a Challenge, your score goes up. Keep this sequence going and you'll be on the front page in nothing flat!
I enjoyed looking at your withered pier (but my brain renamed it weathered pier, almost instantly) The log supports in the sand are elegant and the strong shapes give this image a lot of character. YOur decision to use monochrome definitely enhanced the interest of this composition. I suppose the one thing I would suggest would be to bracket your shots to try to get rid of what appears to be a blown out sky. However, the monochromatic effect definitely reduced the glare from it.
If you have problems resizing your work for DPC standards, PM me and I'll try to help you with it. This would be a scoring plus.
If you think of it next time, it would be helpful if you would include your camera settings and perhaps some indication of what you were looking for in the Photographer's COmments section of the Challenge entry. That would give a member of the Critique Club something to go on if your entry - as you requested - comes up for critique.
Meanwhile, keep up the good work, and I'll look forward to seeing more of your images on DPC.

When this image flashed up on my screen to critique, my first thought was "oh, I hope this scored high." Well, it did quite well, but not as well as I thought it would.
Crisp and sharp, super patterns that swirl the viewer around and around, stunning colors, what more could a voter want. Well, your commentors said they wanted a sharper left side. I say, that's nitpicking, but that's the way it goes sometimes.I suppose you could have cropped some of the fuzzier pleats out of the way, which would have made it a different, but still exciting picture. Hard to tell. When I looked at your portfolio, I visited Bismark I and also enjoyed that one. And see that one had a slightly fuzzy side as well. But I sure don't know what you could have done to make either one sharper.
This was spectacular seeing and good execution.
So, about all I can say is I wish it had scored a 6, it came close, and you have some lovely abstracts in your collection.
Continued success in your DPC Challenges. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
