GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

I see you are a fairly new member of DPC, so I will add my welcome to the others who wish you well on the site.

As others have mentioned, this image is a little soft. If you have a tripod, it can be very helpful, especially with a dark background as you have here. Then you can experiment with your settings to see what is best for the image you want. However, because you didn't fill in the section describing what you wanted from your shot, it is difficult to comment on it any further.

You are getting some good comments on your photography and with practice you will be making great images in no time. If you find those comments helpful, perhaps you may want to mark them as such.

Good luck in future Challenges.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

What an interesting visual treat you have provided here.

You have selected and emphasized very strong lights and darks in this image and I think that treatment is quite effective. I do wonder (from a DPCer standpoint) if the HDR teeters on edge of 'too much.' Hard to say.

Your strong leading line to the end of the pier is balanced nicely by the strong black horizontal area (breakwater?) along the top.

If I was to Pick a Nit, I would suggest removing that power pole to the extreme edge of the left side. Other than that, I think this is a well-executed record of a piece of history.

I hope this little critique is helpful to you.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

First, I have to compliment you on your profile pic. Fun. Then, I see you have no qualms about asking people to take their pictures. This is a gift. You have it, congratulations. You can put this gift to good use in photography. Your Riverfront Skater is a fine piece of photography.

Okay, now to work. I have little to critique in the technical arena here. Your subject is placed well in the frame and the bike is a gem. I would suggest that a little fill-flash would have done wonders for the guy's face. But you were there, I wasn't. He might have objected to a flash going off in front of him.
Is the background a little busy? Well, yeah. It does tend to compete with the story of the guy with the bike. What would have happened if you had gotten lower to the ground? Was there another picture there that would also be compelling? I think what I am getting at is the story. The guy and bike is competing with the background arch and architecture. That may have been what confused the voters and caused a low score. Or maybe not.

All I can do here is toss out ideas. You're good. You will find your route to superior photography. And I look forward to seeing more of your work on DPC.

I hope this little critique was helpful to you.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

You saw this lovely "S" curve when you were out walking in the woods and couldn't resist.
I don't blame you. It is a pleasant scene. In your "october drive" you veered off the path and took your shot from an angle which made that shot appealing. I wonder if a different angle would have provided interest to the viewer this time as well. You may have anticipated this observation and took many pics from various angles, and this was the one that 'spoke' to you. So, this is just a thought.

I do know that a bit of Levels and Curves would have brightened up this shot enormously. There is plenty of sunlight and shadow here that would add interest to the scene. Barring a nice bright red mushroom or flower it helps to have lots of lights and darks to keep the viewer in the scene.

That's about all I can find to critique in this very pleasant image. I look forward to seeing more of your work on DPC and hope these little observations are helpful to you.

Jeepers, that's pretty. Especially the greens. They really bounce with your treatment.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

this is one of those serendipitous critiques. Members of the Critique Club have no control over which image they receive next. The last one I did, just a while ago, was from EL-ROI, and also featured a cute little baby whose image made me giggle. here we go again. Oddly enough, though your sweet child has a few more years under her belt, the critiques could be close to identical.

First, you both received decent scores. I think you probably know kid images, unless they are spectacularly wild, will rarely make the front page. Still, one hopes to get close. I do wonder if a different crop might have made some difference. Say, take the crop from the right (top to bottom) from the child's ear and take it 1/2 the way through the plaid blanket. That centers the action on the cute kid.

Then, and I know you say you are not conversant with Photoshop to any degree, but when you are, try selecting out the background area that is left and blurring it even further than you already did with your excellent exposure.

Other than that, I have nothing to add to your already excellent subject matter and your fine cooperation of your subject.

I hope you find this critique helpful.
