Up For the Blockby jpochardComment: Good indoor action shot, I think you captured the right moment. The first thing I noticed was a yellowish cast. It could primarily be from the lighting, which is always tricky indoors. If you shot in RAW, you could mess around with the WB to nail it down. I also noticed a slight tilt in the horizon which distracts from the subject. With sports shots it's hard to get the right setting because you are fairly limited in your options, high ISO and wide open aperature. Maybe opening it up to 2.8 would give it less DOF, really helping the focus more clear on the players, helping them to pop, also allowing for a faster shutter speed. You're on the right track and I have to commend you for doing sports shots, they are tricky, especially indoors without breaking the bank on an incredibly huge aperature zoom lens. Keep up the good work. I hope that was helpful.

The Game of Lifeby Marc923Comment: I think it might have something to do with color depth. I think your DOF here is appropriate. It almost seems like it needs more contrast (though I see you added +8) and saturation to give it some pop. I think the color temperature may be a little on the cooler side (blue cast). Try messing around with WB if you shot RAW. Compositionwise, there's something about the top half that I can't pinpoint. I really think it's the blue cast and that there are a light of brighter areas, ie. the histogram is right-heavy. I hope that was helpful.

ChicagoNight_7_15 121_Edited_BW.jpgby zodaonlyComment: Very good! I love the clarity of the shot. I like the long exposure and it works very effectively here. Good use of black and white. Excellent background framing.
Keep it up! |

32FordHotRod_sm.jpgby zodaonlyComment: You've definitely got a good start, much better than mine. You have the angle right to make it more interesting and not just another car picture. As someone already mentioned, having a clear subject is pretty essential in having a strong shot. Try to avoid distracting backgrounds that draw the eye away from the subject. Exposure seems a little bright in this particular shot. This would have been a good candidate for a polarizing filter, especially to get that sky a little bluer. You could also try messing around with the Depth of Field (DOF). If you shoot in Av (aperature priority) you can see how you f-stop number affects focus. Here, I would have used a narrower DOF, meaning the number is smaller. This would have isolated the subject much better.
Good work and keep practicing and welcome to a wonderful community! Good luck!

beamishfield.jpgby LiamD2005Comment: First off, very sound exposure and pretty well spot on there. Excellent combination of DOF and sharpness. I agree also that the center composition doesn't make the off-screen anticipation as strong as it could be, maybe if the dog were positioned on the left third of the picture with more space on the right third really driving home "What is he looking at?" So really, the thing I personally would focus on is composition, otherwise it's pretty solid and sound. Its hard to get animals to cooperate so kudos there. Keep it up, I really like it.

Jelly Totsby OddfrogComment: I like the idea. Shots like this are tricky to execute, the main reason being is you want to eliminate shadows, especially on white boards where it will pickup the slightest shadow, usually several strategically placed (at least one sort of diffused light for evenness) lights. This shot is slightly overexposed as well. Good luck! |

Natures Beautyby psartComment: I'm not seeing any foreground bokeh. The exposure is good, maybe a different perspective that included some sort of bokeh to really make the subject pop out |
