The red plate is 100% perfect for this image. I really like the angles against the place mat. My main suggestion here would be to make sure the place mat takes up the whole background. The black area isn't adding anything to this photo for me.

Obvious tripod use: Low. I do see what looks to be slight HDR, but I'm not certain of that. This really looks like a shot that could easily be taken handheld (I'm sure you did use a tripod, but the obvious factor isn't there).

Interesting perspective you chose. Instead of getting up close you seemed to go behind the public space into the inner workings of the carnival. I'm surprised you didn't go for a longer exposure to get the lines of light.

Beautiful image with a beautiful meaning to it. Black and white was a perfect choice.

Obvious tripod use: Medium-high. To me, studying the image makes it obvious that a tripod was used. But I put medium high because the tones of this image make the foreground stick out, and the background fade away. The background is the area of obvious tripod use, so if someone is looking quickly, it may not be obvious to them.

I have the feeling this photo could be so much more. The colors feel washed out and the focus seems off. i'm not trying to be mean, this is just an honest critique.
