Great start. Catchlight, clear of obstructions and some environment OOF in the BG. Excellent. Don't forge the s/s 2x FL Rule: If at 400mm s/s should be 2x (or more) to get crisp and sharp i.e. 1/800s or preferably 1/1600s so you have done well here at 1/2000s. Push the D7000 to at least ISO 1600. Noise is still pretty minimal there. I use De Noise 5 if it's too prominent. Don't be afraid to DeNoise, as long as you get your shot.

Still no excuse! The bad habit persists when you do get a chance to fire or handle a real weapon. I've PM'd you the rest of my feelings :) Suffices to say one should not depict finger on trigger unless actually firing a weapon safely or in self defence...In terms of the art and mood you were depicting we can debate this one to the death. Oddly you got an HM. I say oddly because of the anti gun mood/voting I've seen reflect on DPC over the years.

Beautiful scene. Great positioning to get river and valley in an appealing composition. I'd apply a bit of subtle HDR/Tone Mapping in sky and land to make it pop some more. Perhaps an inch off the top as Rian suggests but not too much! The sky is very dramatic.
