rusty's handby muckpondComment: Interesting shapes and textures. The predominantly diagonal lines make it very dynamic. |

Marmelade Blossomsby ellamayComment: Good composition. The image has a nice relaxing feel. I wish the blossoms were in better focus. |

Fingerpaintingby leskatausComment: I like the gradation between yellow and red to make orange. But it's hard to make out the picture being made here. |

Parentingby sagestudioComment: The pose and expression are perfect for the cover of Parenting. The distortion caused by the wide-angle focal length adds to the effect. Great job! |

Watercolor Digestby carlacrypticComment: I doubt Watercolor Digest would put a photo on the cover, but this is certainly beautifully done. I enjoy the image, but wish there was more detail in the bird and less in the background. |

Brandonby nsoroma79Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
The message
To me, this is a person who is confident and caring, and perhaps a bit daring. I don't know if this fits Brandon, but that isn't important to me; it is a great portrait.
Creative choices
The directional lighting works well here. Lack of fill lighting creates shadows and makes a low key image, which works well. Black and white is a good choice, and the blue eyes are nicely subtle, bringing out his soul without being too garish. The composition are great, as is his pose, especially positioning his ear just right to show the stud.
Technical aspects
The soft focus is perfect for a portrait. His right cheek is a bit bright for the darkness of the rest of the image; the texture is lost in that area. |

Amature Hucksterby flip89Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
The message
This is a nice portrait. The camera makes it clear that the subject is a photographer, and the low key and hiding most of the face behind the camera and hands give it an air of mystery. The one eye that is visible is expressive; this is a serious photographer.
Creative choices
The natural light is very effective; it nicely lights the one side and leaves most of the image in shadow, producing a good low key image (although I find the bright reflection on the camera distracting). Black and white works well. I don't like the vertical line on the left side (edge of the mirror?) or the horizontal lines in the background, and there is a somewhat distracting line at bottom center.
Technical aspects
Focus and exposure are just right. Tonal range is appropriate for the low key approach. Sharpness is just right. |

Lighthouse Digestby browntComment: Great composition. The island has an interesting shape and a nice variety of textures. It's a bit washed out; a polarizer may have helped when taking the photo, but adjusting levels would improve it some. And some sharpening would bring out the nice textures. |
