summer afternoonby tangueraComment: I've been quoting the same types of things in my comments: Art should make you feel something. It should go beyond just documenting the world. This one works for me. Mostly because it just makes me curious. I'm wondering about the story. It could simply just be models modeling dresses, but I'm seeing a much better storyline and I keep looking farther and farther into this trying to find more clues. Well done. |

"No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings" William Blakeby wildirisComment: I'm guessing that some of the art fiends will see this as nature documentary vs art. Being a nature fan, I have a tendency to find most nature shots more documentary than art, because there are just so many that there's a been there done that feel.
This, however, really works for me. The lighting is spectacular. The crop is awesome. And it just makes you feel like you're flying, as well. Art should evoke something in you. It should make you curious, intrigued, sad, angry, it needs to transcend just simply documenting the world. I'm not sure why this fits in that category for me. But it does. Well done. |

study of a black spider in colourby AbraComment: Ok -- this is pretty cool. I'm curious what it would look like with more muted colors. I'm guessing it's better this way. It just makes me curious playing with it with different tones and maybe even b&w. This works for me. |

The hairdresserby redpandaComment: It really had promise, but there's just too much riot to it, imo. The colors are so bright, they're a little painful (maybe I shouldn't be voting with a headache :). The blown lights just draw the eyes, but don't add much. I also wonder if it would be stronger cropped in from the left a bit. And from the right, now that I look more. Great idea, close, but it just doesn't work well for me. |

Lazy Sundayby GeorgesBogaertComment: He's marvelous, and beautifully photographed. But this seems like a wonderful documentary piece vs something I'd define as art. Art, imo, is something that makes you want to explore it more. Something you want to sink yourself into. Something that makes you feel something: intrigued, annoyed, etc. And something in which you discover more each time you look at it. |

Summer in the Parkby ElaineComment: It's a gorgeous shot, and very well done. However, imo, art is something that is intriguing, elusive, curious, annoying, or something of that kind. Something that makes you feel something. Something that makes you want to look at it again and again. This is a beautifully done photograph, but it seems more documentary than art (even though it's processed beautifully.) It's lovely, but there's nothing in it that makes me want to explore or see it again and again. |

Overheadby DistantColoursComment: I'm torn on this one. I didn't like it at first. Just didn't call to me. It got more interesting as I looked at it. The head is so small compared to the body that it's interesting, yet kind of annoying (not that you can do anything about it -- more for the balance of the photo). I'm not sure that it's art, by my definition, but it's still funky enough for a 6. |

...killer instinct...by SistoComment: My first thought was -- hey that's pretty cool. I like the high key. It's intriguing. But then subtle things began bothering me a bit. The nose being basically completely gone except the nostrils (yes, a little around the sides) but the bridge being completely gone made the nostrils look kind of bizarre. It seems bottom heavy. Maybe less knife? Funny thing is, I like the shadow on the neck. 7 for the initial impact, but I'm not sure it has the staying power for a higher score. |

<4>by mpetersComment: This is so close, imo, but not quite there. The light is intriguing, but I think a little too washed out to make it exciting. There's a lot to explore: the sagging shoulder strap, wondering what she's reading, her expression, the background. But the lighting/processing just falls a bit flat for me. 6 |
