step right up...by klkitchensComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Great atmosphere you have captured here - none of the fun of the fair but I like it. The coloration works really well and I get a real sense of being there.
Critical stuff: It looks just the tiniest bit dark to me, I think I would have raised the luminosity of the mid-tones just a tad.
Overall: A very nice image. Crafted and effective. |

underexposedby bvyComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives:Well, there is certainly plenty of documentary merit in this image and the way it is shot communicates a covert feel.
Critical stuff: It looks like the man is offering a cigarette to this child - if that's the case and I had my way, I happily see someone shoot him in the face. That's how strongly I feel about it. However, back to your photo - it is difficult to be too critical, I interpret it as a shot from the hip with a camera phone - perhaps you couldn't quite believe what you were seeing either.
Overall: Good photograph? - No Powerful image? Yes. |

Demond Fishingby nolsComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Lovely smooth and subtle colour transitions are very nice here and capture the mood of the moment very well. I like the confidence you have had to let the the sun into your image on the right and the figures themselves draw the eye into the scene nicely.
Critical stuff: I know the shore / bank doesn't need to be horizontal but I think it does need rotating a little to get the men vertical. I'm not sure that the left hand side of the image is particularly strong.
Overall, a very attractive and peaceful image - one that stands out to because of the way you have handled the light. |

Waiting for Excitementby grgkopanasComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: What a wonderful effect - I wouldn't be surprised if you get a validation request. I'm seeing this as a longer exposure Lensbaby shot though and it makes me want to try it! How effectively you've isolated your subject and the monochrome treatment suits the image well.
Critical stuff: The right side of her face (our right) has an indistinct boundary that I'm not sure works - artefact between zones of blur brush and sharpen brush?
Overall: A striking image and one I really like too. |

The Gazeby JaimeVinasComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: I like the way this says human and mannequin in (almost) equal measure, so fixed is her gaze. I like the overall composition too - I'm sure you'll get comments about excess negative space but I think it remains balanced. The touches of pink work well - offering a suggestion of softness against the hardness elsewhere.
Critical stuff: This is a very clean and crisp edit - I'd have grunged it up with some grain, a vignette and darker or even monochrome colour treatment. Having said that, there is much originality here and I respect that you have stuck to your guns.
Overall: Interesting image - not one I'm rushing to fav, but I like it nonetheless. |

Salvador's Kiteby dahkotaComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: This is a really striking image - so full of interest that I'm sure you had a whole host of editing options / choices of look here. I think your chosen treatment works well enough but it is the scene itself and the POV that carries it.
Critical stuff: Although the colour scheme works - I'm still not sure you're getting the best out of this image; something that is in colour with a blue / green 70s kind of coloration with a vignette would probably have been my choice - but hey, it's your choice and I do like it.
Overall: Interesting work - one that keeps a viewer's interest for a goodly while. |
