A moment of silence

A moment of silence

Apologies - no time for a 'Longer Look' comment before challenge end. I'll come back after.

Back to update this comment. Apologies, I'd forgotten I'd be in an Internet black hole before rollover.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: A moment of silence indeed - yet you have communicated the sound of it magnificently. As a memorial this photograph is important, a permanent moment of remembrance - how much more powerful than the temporary flora that flanks your image. The human element of your brother's quiet form anchors the image and your choice of toning for the image is perfect.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all

Overall: An image that resonates with our lives.

Positives: What a great scene - has my eyes and brain going around in circles - laugher, photography, me, laugher, photographer, me... It actually makes my head bob back and forth like a chicken!

The photographers stance is most amusing and gives us pause for thought about how we might look when we are out and about. The laughing woman is of course key - not least because she looks so terribly jolly!

Critical stuff: Although I like the high saturation, I'm not fond of the red hue of their skin - makes me want to drop a Nik control point onto the skin and selectively pull the saturation back a bit in this areas. I also might've cropped the bench at the mid-point - but I can see the merits of keeping it whole (though I do dislike the plaque!)

Overall: Well seen, well taken. Very nice end result.

Positives: Seagulls in focus? Certainly not, the technical and artistic feat of isolating the girl in this way trumps all such notions. I'm sure it was tempting to reflect your eclectic choices with an edgy monochrome presentation - I'm so glad you didn't; the colour works fabulously well. I also like the sloping ground - it fixes our POV so well.

Critical stuff: Not much at all. I'd probably have cloned away that bit of sky just beyond the tip of the wing of the 2nd bird as it competes a little with her face.

Overall: Lovely stuff. Full of life.

Positives: Standout texture and toning on this image - and the relationship between your head and 'hers'. The catchlight in the eye is just brilliant and offer the sense of nailed focus that anchors the image. The slight vignette is perfectly judged too

Critical stuff: I have really mixed views on your cropped neck - part of me wants a bit more space for you, the other half likes what it does to subjugate you to the lamp/light - in offers a rich metaphor.

Overall: Unusually well made image - conceptual and simple. Well played.

Positives: This has a sense of menace that intrigues me - there's nothing explicitly menacing here but the sense of foreboding you have created is palpable. Perhaps Deb's notion of 'harmonics' is on the money, but for me we are shaken, each jolt being positively reinforced by the next - 8.2 on the Richter scale!

The structures of of somewhat secondary interest but the light is something else all together - like a junction between night and day. The overall effect is one of day being broken.

Critical stuff: Nothing really.

Overall: A powerful image - communicates with more senses that it should.

Positives: This is almost primordial in its construction - like the start of everything - first light, first eyes. It's proportions are perfect too. Those curling flares create a sense of power - very interesting.

Critical stuff: I find the target banding to be a bit unfortunate.

Overall: Pure, distilled, nothing extraneous. I like that.

Out the box brilliant. A 10 (voted earlier) and a fave; I'd already proclaimed my blue to another. They may have to share.

This attracted my highest score - her hair is amazing; the drying time is probably best measured in days!

Beautifully conceived and constructed.
