For me (and this is important), DPC is about the single shot development, not using the computer as a backdrop and using multiple images.
I gave a 10 during the challenge thinking 'wow, the set up must have been fantastic'. Now, I still enjoy the photo on its own merits, but I would rather not see it winning.
I do think that your other stuff is really great and that you are truly a fantastic photographer. Message edited by author 2005-09-30 10:46:04. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

You have a nice idea here: showing how life will survive in the most unlikely places. However, sometimes good concepts don't turn into good visual images. The shrub is almost lost in the shade of the roof, taking away a lot of the visual impact of the shrub jutting out of the building. The sky is okay, but not special, meaning that a lot of the physical space is quite boring. Actually, the sky is a part of nature in a way that the building isn't. Yet, the building has more texture and is more interesting than nature. This goes against the intention of the photo. If you had waited until the sky was beautiful, your meaning would have been strengthened so much. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Of all the 3s I gave out in this challenge, this one caused me the most grief. It's not that bad, really. The colours are vivid. The composition is dynamic and the challenge has been met head on. I scored low because the subject is so depressing and unwelcoming. I know that that's your point - the end of summer exemplified in flowers. But it turns me off. Also your fillflash worked well ont he top flowers but not on the bottom one, and it created a harsh shadow inside the structure. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Aside from the snapshot feeling here, the main reason I scored low was because I don't feel you met the challenge. The camera angle is obviously higher than the players - not exactly 'from the ground up'. Other little quibbles - the standing guy really detracts from the action. There's no action. I know that your title talks of a static position, but sports shots work better when there's action. If you had waited until they actually kicked, the effect would have been much more dramatic. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

The boring sky and the choice of focus are the two major reasons I voted low. If the sky had been a beautiful blue one with lots of interesting clouds, the score would be much higher. Also, I feel that the focus needs to be rethought. Usually, out of focus parts push the eye to the in focus bits. Here, your lower stem is more or less sharp, but the flower head is not. Does this symbolise an upward, unknown journey? It might, but the effect is depressing because the colours in the bit we know are very dark. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

1/ I'm not sure if I'm looking at a single subject or a single scene. The title says 'machine' or something like that, but what stands out more are the backing, the ventilator and the overall scene elements.
2/ There's a slightly out of focus feeling on the tip of the machine whereas the corrigated metal is sharper. This makes the photograph uncomfortable for me.
3/ There's dark and light, but I'm not convinced about the placings of either for any particular reason. Overall, (unless I've missed something) I feel that this photo is a collection of unconnected bits rather than a coherent whole. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

1/ I don't feel that you've met the challenge. True, these grapes might be near the ground, but I don't know. More than that, I don't feel that there's a necessary connection to the ground in this shot.
2/ I like the dof, the off-centre presentation and the backdrop. I don't like the overblown sky.
3/ Overall, I feel that the whole shot is just, well, too ordinary to bother capturing the moment forever in a photograph. That's just my opinion, of course. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

This is a touch boring for me as a subject. Yes, you meet the challenge, but there's nothing special about the subject, nor have you tried to make the subject into something special. The lack of focus in the bottom part doesn't have a reason. Often the out of focus part leads our eye to the main subject, but this one is all very much the same. Indeed, my eye is taken to the top of a pipe and left there, hanging. The sky colour isn't very vivid. The wood is done very nicely. I can see an attempt to make the strong lines interesting, but overall, I'm not really drawn to this photo. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
