Piercing by Ryu Murakamiby P-A-U-LComment: I am not a border police, and in fact I often use top and bottom black borders myself. Though I wouldn't do it in a challenge about novels. I was looking forward to portrait images that may work out well as book covers. But that's probably just me.
I would have set the focus range up to the eyes and applied selective gaussian to the corners with distracting elements.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Manby namComment: Wonderful portrait. I am not familiar with the novel, but it doesn't matter. I like the soft natural light, but a little more contrast may have added some points.

On Golden Pondby dtremainComment: I see that you have aligned the image based on a false horizon. The river may be running diagonally in your frame, and you mistook it for a horizon. But water is flat, and so all reflections must be perfectly vertical, which isn't the case for your your image.

Fanny Hillby disassociationComment: I am not familiar with the novel, but if it was about the story of a woman in a sexually oriented literature, then the image doesn't do it justice.
Lighting is harsh and doesn't suit the mood of the image. The exposure and focus on the face seem to be a bit off, and the background is too messy and distracting.

Alice in Wonderlandby tvsometimeComment: Hmm. Perhaps we read a different novel of the same title, this isn't the Alice in Wonderland that I remember.
I am a fan of street portraits though, and perhaps if this was in a street photography challenge, I would have rated this higher. For now I will give this a 5. |

Esperanza Corderoby odriewComment: The soft focus on the edges did not work out well for me. I would have cropped a portrait (as in vertical crop) of the subject, which was nicely captured, and I see that portrait as a nice cover for the selected novel.
Overall an appealing shot that somehow tells a story. Perfect for the challenge.

"Airport" by Arthur Hailey (1968)by HarveyGComment: The inclusion of the cockpit and dashboard objects did not work out well for me.
The upper left portion provides opprtunity to crop an image that may work out well for a cover of the chosen novel.

Lord of the Fliesby posthumousComment: Maybe a preference thing, but I would have cropped out some of the upper left portion of the photo. The image is in monochrome, yet somehow it doesn't show much of a contrast.
I like the expression on the subject's face. The shot feels like it is part of bigger story, which suits the challenge well.
