Piano

Comment:
I want to know what you (or your subject) is playing! (Maybe it'll be in the notes.)

I suppose I should not be surprised at the presence of several piano-related shots. I like the blur although the left hand maybe is a little too still by comparison. The angle is interesting, but something about the lighting seems off -- maybe a bit too bright on the moving fingers, or is that an artifact of the motion capture?

Heh, after so many duotone images rated last week with non-coloured landscape scenes, it was actually a little strange to see a colour one. (Not bad, just a quick double-take.) Very nice, the capturing of the wake or wave against the pylon, which is definitely something that evokes sound for me -- I grew up near a large body of water. The background being such a bright green on the left is a little distracting but I'm not sure what all you could have done about that and still caught the water motion well.

Split Second

Split Second

At first I was wondering what the connection was to the topic, before it sunk in the alarm was ringing. This puts it in a range of photos where my initial impression wasn't SOUND (in your face) but afterthought showed it to be correctly on topic, which may say as much about my perception as it does about the choice of topic.

I think the ringing bell might stand out more with different lighting or a different background (or maybe even in colour, especially if this is brass-toned), which would have helped that initial impression. Otherwise, I like it.

This is a neat shot with the motion-capture of the splash and the individual motes of water, but inasmuch as splashing does have a distinctive sound, there isn't that immediate gut 'sound' reaction to it. On topic but a little loose of interpretation, I'd call it. I like the, well, I was going to say B&W but it appears to have a very mild sepia tone to it, so, 'duotone', nature of the photo.

This is a very, very neat shot in terms of lighting and composition in general. Unfortunately, even though there's a belated connection to the topic in my mind, the initial impression was not of sound, but of light and shadow.

EMERGENCY!!
by Ruchart

Comment:
If the shot included obviously lit emergency lights, it would have had a bit more impact for me in terms of 'sound'; I am not certain if they just aren't on or if the lighting conditions keep it from being obvious. I do like the shot; it's a very crisp photo and framed well.

Hand Drums

Comment:
nice to see drums, first time I've run across them. Unfortunately like several other instrument images, static instruments without someone playing them does not do as much to evoke the concept of 'sound'. I do like the way this is set up, and the glow on the bottom left's hide. Can't tell what kind of drums the left ones are (tom-toms?), which I suppose is immaterial; I'm just naturally curious.

D-minor, Mic's View

D-minor, Mic's View

Comment:
Hmm, seems a strange angle for a mic view, but okay. I like it's an action shot, though with a "D-minor" title I think I'd rather have seen the chording than the strumming. The lighting or angle or toning or likely all three washes out the strings, which is a pity as they're the center of focus. I don't actually care for the toning, actually. The idea is good.

I'm, erm, still not sure I understand the setup. It definitely evokes noise -- very nifty motion blur on the hammer, btw, although the resulting blur on the pot is a little hard to focus the eye on -- but the concept leaves me boggled. Not physically abstract but metaphysically abstract? Good lighting, too.

Mmm. BaaaAAAAaaacon.

Take several shots? Half your bacon is nearly uncooked and half seems done, and there's a lot of grease. This is not as immaterial as it sounds; it seems less natural than it could.

I do, however, like the idea; bacon (frying things in general) has a very distinct sound, and the cast-iron pan on the grate is visually interesting, and oh my god that sounded pretentious. But 'pretty' isn't the right word, so, I'll stick with the old VI.

Did you eat the bacon after?
