another comment, I see you are using a Nikon D80. Are you shooting RAW? I would always shoot something like this in RAW format so I have more control over the final processing. The colors seem oversaturated and too high a contrast probably adds to the blow out in the whites. In my opinion a natural scene requires careful control of contrast and saturation to keep it from looking artificial.

Getting good shots of birds with white feathers is always a challenge. In this photo the whites in the birds are blown out. For bird shots I usually shoot at -1/3 ev to make sure that I blow out the whites. If the bird is close enough I will use a "fill flash" to open up shadows.
