Christian persecution complex, anyone?

While the shot has some nice colours and details, the image as a whole does look contrived and "weak" for such powerful imagery.

Your reaction to critique reminds me of when I was moderating a poetry forum. Anyone that wrote anything in praise of their Lord (which ever one that might be, according to their culture), would assume that they were above critique due to the "holy" nature of their subject matter. But this is not the case, and many truly awful poems were written for and about God/s. Now this is far from a truly awful photograph - there is much to like about it, but also much that could have been done better. Makka's critique was spot-on, imho.

I would like to have seen this girl's pose and facial expressions look more laboured, more tortured; and some burning of the sky to make it more dramatic, like the God/s are angry. Something to give more drama to it all!

Sonifo, the photographer chose this subject matter, so it is the photographer's job to make it work. It's a pretty picture, but it is not a powerful one. Sorry if I come across as harsh, but I don't buy into the idea that if someone choses a religious theme, they are automatically exempt from anything other than high praise.

hehehe..not loooking at your profile I would say you are new here? The flag and religious beliefs do knock a photo down. That quote that you quoted from me was a question to the guy who wrote the critique.

I believe a critique is to help someone get better not to tell them how YOU would take the picture. hmm..how to explain...

OK...forget it.. I guess I feel the critiques are more of one persons opinion rather than a good hardcore critique that she could actually learn from, but I could be wrong...I tend to be wrong quite a bit.

I am not a religious freak, but yes I am a Christian woman. :-))

Hmmm...interesting photo here. Reading through the comments you received it appears some people didn't like the theme you used, but as for myself being a very non-religious person I won't take any view on it here.

The main thing that I see looking at this photo is that she's not really popping out from the background. Her outfit and the rock formations kind of blend together to a certain degree. I've noticed in your comments that you used a little dodge and burn on the photo. In my opinion I would of liked to have seen a little more, especially on that awesome cloudy sky in the background and a little more on the rock formations (which by the way are really cool).

The focus seems pretty crisp and it's a nice balancing DOF that you've used. Maybe you could of tried the a slightly different crop so she wasn't so central or maybe shot from a slightly different angle? It's hard to say without having been there and seen what was around, plus, as you mentioned it was for a dance shoot.

Overall it's a nice photo. I'm not a big fan of the expression on her face though. Maybe a slightly different pose with the cross could of made this a lot more powerful?

Maybe some of these points may of helped your score a little, it's always hard to say because everyone has differing opinions. You've got some fantastic photos in your portfolio there so keep at it. I'm sure more ribbons will come your way!

Neil

I don't see this as a true critique!

Love this shot! Wow! It made me have goosebumps..maybe because I seen the dance and know the girl but Angela, this shot totally rocks and is the best (in my opinion) shot i have seen from you.
Keep up the good work! You will definitly go far with it as you do anything else!

I really like how you have it set up. It would be nice to see a picture of this with them in front of it when they get to highschool. A bit blurry but great memory and capture.
