What I do is use the greens nearby to set my exposure. Red reflects about as much light as black, so if you use the red petals to get your exposure it will not be right. If you have a variety of greens nearby (sun/shade) do an exposure w/one of each. I think you made a smart choice to get in the shade, too. I hope this helps!

I got a smile from your notes. Oh dear, how many times have I been surprised by what I see on the screen when I start post-processing. The appeal of these colors is immediate, I can see why you took it.

Canna flowers are tough & red is a difficult color, so this is a pretty good capture with only a little bit of super-saturaition in the red. You were lucky to get a bloom w/no damage to the petals. The frame works well with this. Keep on clickin'!
