Day-Two.jpgby RoosterComment: Great scene, great tones, great composition. There ya go - 3 'greats' from someone who feels like chewing his arm off when presented with a toddler shot.
Something to try here - I can't tell if the focus landed on the ground behind her, but if the focus is correct then you might want to hit this with another shot of USM or (preferabbly) smart sharpen after you resize it. Resizing before save for web tens to muddy things up and you can usually correct for it with a modest application of sharpening again. |

Day 1: Bridge Reflectionsby glad2badadComment: Well obviously I have a thing for bridge arches and their reflections... I like this, though it might look a bit better rotated slightly to the left so the top of the bridge is horizontally level (though given the angle you shot this from that might make for vertical posts going off on an angle). I like the high contrast. Bet this looks nice when the water is still. |

Newsboyby dtremainComment: Interesting subjects, nice tones. Focus is a bit off. The white shirt is overexposed. Something to consider is that in black and white photography it is generaly better to UNDERexpose the shot a bit. You are after as much detail as possible in dark and middle gray tones. This is the oppossite of what you read about 'exposing to the right' and trying to capture as much highlight detail as you can. Also looks like some feet and head amputation going on here. Would like to see the kid on the right completely. The one in the background is hidden behind the paper anyway so no big loss there. Overall a nice shot. |

Day-One.jpgby RoosterComment: Is this tone mapped? Or high radius USM? The tones are interesting, but the halos and the bit of blown out sky on the left hold this back a bit. |

_MG_7298.jpgby JLCComment: In the spirit of wanting to learn...
Glad2badad mentioned a very important point which is that half the battle of b/w is recognizing a suitable subject which the technique can best exploit. Skin on green is probably not the best, given the lack of tonal variety.
Focus is on the grass, not the feet.
Composition isn't bad, looks like you were going for a rule of thirds location with placing the feet there.
Obviously this is a mind-numbingly boring subject, but you probably knew that. Feet could be interesting I think, but probably not your own as you would need to find some other angle to shoot from to present them in a way that catches the viewer's interest. |

Shells for Lighting Practiceby WalesPComment: Great subject full of interesting patterns, textures and built to bend shadows and light. Throw it on a mirror and double the fun. Nice sharpness throughout the image. Contrast is good and there's a healthy amount of detail left in the dark areas. Lighting is nice, but it doesn't really exploit the curves in these objects nor emphasize the texture on their surface. Message edited by author 2007-09-01 18:20:57. |

1 - Pink Flowerby ErikVComment: Little more contrast and this shot would go from sedate to holy glowing flower petals. Very nice. |

record.jpgby electrolostComment: Strangely enough I find myself most intrigued by that patch of wall there and the textures on its surface. |
