Low Tide

Low Tide

Comment:
The soft focus of this image suggest that there might be some camera shake involved. Compositionally, I have a couple of suggestions you might try. First, I would have liked to have seen the all of the red boat in the picture. The color of the red boat complements the colors of the blue boat; however it should be part of the story instead of just looking like something stuck in the background. Second, if you would have moved to the left to get more of the beach and water into the image, it would have better supported your title Low Tide. As it is, I almost missed the water in the far right corner, thus the boat looked like it was being stored.

Having an object that is always stationary as the main subject for a stationary challenge will not make it a strong entry for many voters. This image suffers from very flat lighting. A little bit of work with levels, curves, and saturation would go a long way. I would have also have like to have seen a little different prospective when you took this, as having the monument dead center makes the image look very average. Move to the left and get a little lower to the ground. Stretch your imagination and see what you can come up with.

The calm of the water around the goose definitely says stationary to me. However, the placement of the goose in the image leaves a considerable amount of negative space in the bottom left of the picture. This negative space doesn't really add to the picture, as the orientation of the goose and the shadows in the water lead your eye away from the negative space. The focus on the goose also appears to be sharpest on the rear end instead of the head.

This is an interesting image for this challenge. It shouts stationary in two different ways, by looking like it has never been used and by looking like it is inoperable. The faded red color adds to both interpretations. What is really hurting this image is the pole on the righthand side. The white and red paint looks newer than the fire alarm and really draws my eye.

This is an exceptional image that I had to rate lower than I wanted because it is an extremely weak subject for a stationary challenge. If it is any consolation, I have added it to my favorites.

After taking a second look I'm bumping this to a six. Having something that once moved and is now a fossil definitely fits the challenge. The colors are warm and rich but the bright spot in the background is a distraction. This will be a nice addition to your portfolio when you clone out the bright spot (Darn basic editing rules).

The technical aspects of this image are really pretty good. The focus is sharp, the lighting is good, and the colors are well balanced. However, stacking three normally stationary objects on top of each other is not the strongest subject for this challenge.

The focus on the insect is pretty good but the little fellow sure didn't cooperate with his pose. Here are a few suggestions you might want to try to see if they improve this image. It might be possible to remove the lighter green areas of the background if you used a square crop. This would help eliminate a couple of distractions that draw a person's eyes away from the main subject. You may also want to try to bring out some detail in the body of the insect by playing around with levels. You made a pretty decent capture; however, the competition was pretty tough this challenge.

 Getting Ready to Fly

This image is very unique and artistic. As presented the bird really isn't the focal point of the composition but instead the bird house. This really weakens the stationary statement of this image, as bird houses are normally stationary. If I were to print this image to hang on the wall, I would be tempted to clone out the bird completely.
