Harbingerby margiemuComment: Interesting image and I commend you for going out on a limb and trying something conceptual, but I don't know if the raven and the title alone will meet the cut-throat DPC standards. I think it might have been stronger with another element in the photo that implies a more literal sign of things to come, just to compliment the allusion to Edgar Allen Poe's, The Raven. Technically, it seems like it could use some work with contrast as well. Lots of gray, but no real black or white, at least on my monitor. I think its a neat shot compositionally and really like the fact that you tried the conceptual route, maybe just needs a bit more to really nail the challenge. |

How's it hanging?by NefirComment: The chair and hanging feet speak volumes and make this a very impactful image. Using white shows against the cold hard brick background really work well and hit viewers between the eyes with the message. On the technical side, I can't decide if I like the grungy vertical lines spanning through the image or not. On one hand, they really add to the harsh mood, on the other, it's a bit distracting. Up to the viewer I guess. While I'm normally a fan of a humorous title, I don't think it plays in favor of the image here. I don't vote according to titles, but "how's it hanging?" seems a little tactless for the image's morbid mood. Overall, very well done. 8o) |

Rodentby cornettcagComment: The shape of this skelton is quite intriguing! That fur ball steels my attention though. What does it mean? |

"He Died With His Boots On"by naomikComment: Excellent idea! Where better to look for death than to an old western! The sepia was a perfect choice in my opinion. You've met the challenge well, established a fitting mood and keep the viewers eye right where it needs to be—within the edges of the image! Well done! 8o) |

Ring a Round of Rosiesby ShrinkComment: Interesting take on the challenge. The blue funnel is the empty "sands of time" right? It's a little distracting to me really. Your main death trope is the scull and the rosies are a wonderful accent. Maybe those are the only two elements this images really needed. I think it does a good job illustrating death, but it doesn't evoke much emotion in me. That emotive response is one of the main things I look for in this challenge, but I'm just one voter. ;o) Still a good image. 8o) |

A Beautiful Deathby marboComment: This is a beautiful image but I'm afraid it might be getting hammered by voters in the particular challenge. It's a technical masterpiece and impeccibly processed. I really like your idea, "A Beautiful Death." It may have been hard with this particular image, but for the sake of really nailing the challenge, it would have been nice to offer some sort of contrasting element within, so that even if I couldn't see the title, I'd understand what was trying to be conveyed. But very well done! 7. 8o) |

Who pays the ferrymanby fredandaudComment: What I like: the wonderful textured, gradient from black to white. That does a wonderful job drawing my eye right to the subject and beyond into his infinite future. Buuuttt... the subject feels less sharp than he ought to be. There is also very little detail in the shadows. Not a serious downfall given the type of image, high-contrast works, but I just feel like there could be a bit more technical clarity. It doesn't give me an immidiate sence of death, but I guess that just gives me a chance to read into it more. Well done overall! 8o) |

Despairby NstiG8trComment: I took a bit of studying, but I finally realized that the subject has the barral of a gun in his mouth. It was slightly difficult to tell at first, but given the title and challenge, it became apparent. But the lighting is quite nice and the black background sets the mood well. It's still a bit hard for me, as a viewer, to connect with the subject and really feel what the subject feels though. Seems more emotion/angst in the subject's face would really drive the point home. But it's definitely a well done image! 8o) |

The Kiss of Winter ~ a bud never to bloomby mangymooseComment: I like that you've tried to do something different and unique and the concept is interesting. But perhaps more emphasis on the ice, or just more ice in general, and less sunshine would have really driven the "death" point home. Might also help to really single out the flower from the others and from the background. Nice image though. 8o) |
