Nicely composed, captured and treated ... excellent application of shallow DOF.

Good execution of Shallow DOF ... unfortunately there are too many things in the same focal plane, IMO. My eye can't focus in on any one element, wandering between the time piece on the right and the adjacent movement. I think the image would be more pleasing if one of either/or were the primary subject. Can't fault the DOF though; nicely treated as well.

The background is so blurred here it's actually difficult to assess the DOF -- i.e., other than the foreground leaf on the upper right there's no sense of DOF at all really ... the background just looks like an orange backdrop.

Assuming a Selective Color adjustment layer was employed to achieve this effect, given the limiting Basic Editing rules. If so, nicely done ... though I think the muted background actually detracts from it looking OOF and therefor dimishes the goal of displaying DOF.

Nice winter scene. I think the DOF works with the composition here, though a touch shallower might make it a stronger contender in *this* particular challenge.

Comment:
Shallow DOF is implied by the blurred sky in the background, but the background blur doesn't really do a lot to enhance or emphasize the subject as executed here. The image also suffers from a few technical deficiencies: composition, feet cropped out of frame; color muted and muddy; and overall a tad soft. Nice attempt though.

Nice example of the challenge theme ... and an elegantly simple image. That said, the use of shallow DOF doesn't highlight a subject so much as highlighting use of shallow DOF. ;-)

Shallow DOF at work in this image, but it lacks a focal point IMO. My eyes wander around aimlessly with no where to stop.
