Wagon Full O' Flowersby sonyalphausrComment: So, the #1 rule of photography is simplicity. Make your image as simple as it needs to be, but none simpler.
You have to think of shot as though you were painting it by hand... like, you are "adding" each element of the composition. Here, there is not real reason to "add" that hose to the left, or that red thing to the right. They are just distractions and do nothing for the photograph. Every element of the composition has to add to the photo, otherwise it detracts from it. That selective-ness and attention to detail is what sets a photographer's photograph apart from a regular guy's snapshot. You received a low score on this image because it looks too much like a snapshot, doesn't look like enough thought was put into it.
Having said all that, I like the sharp focus and I like the depth of field effects... there are some interesting things about the shot, but ultimately, a 'snap-shot-ish' shot of some rather unremarkable flowers will not hold the visual interest of many people.
I don't mean to sound harsh here, it's just that I saw from your posting in a thread that people were not giving you enough feedback on your shots, so I thought I would go ahead and give you an honest assessment of what I thought about your first entry. |

.::Epic::. by Pipe_DreamComment: this is a sick shot and the scene itself I'm sure was just insane. You received a good score but it was no doubt hampered by some of the quality issues with this pic, namely the fact that the trees and mountain just seem to have way too much noise reduction on them... just doesn't look sharp, looks smudgy. Maybe you did this to get over the 800 ISO, i'm not sure, but if this shot was tack sharp I'm sure it would have top 10'd and maybe ribboned, what a spectacular scene. |

Homeless, Wheelchair Bound, Long Term Unemployed : Colin IS The BIG ISSUEby hotpastaComment: The light, the composition, the smoke... all brilliant in my opinion. This shot is painfully underrated, but I suspect it is due to the actual image's somewhat tenuous link to the concept of poverty (he doesn't look poor off the bat). I'm sure if this was zoomed out people would see it more clearly, but the photo as it stands is a fave. |

21st Century?by cptpolandComment: I do like the title and I do like the shot, I think the size diminishes the impact of the photograph on the site b/c the people don't stand out right away. go Poland |

German Engineeringby bruskiComment: nice ride! Way to go on 6th place Nick, way to represent team Poland. Is that a filter you've used to achieve this? The lighting just seems way too professional for a basic editing shot. Well done. |
