Safe in my fathers armsby TUBORGComment: Hello Arnthor and greetings from the "Critique Club"
Let me first start by saying what a lovely moment you have captured here...the chipper young fellow entangled within his father's loving and protective arms. I find the composition very pleasing, my eyes moves about the image with ease yet never leaves it.
I do find some things a bit problematic with the processing, which apparently many others did not, please remember everyone has different tastes, it really insn't a question of right or wrong. : }
For an entry in the "Image Grain" challenge, I do not see very much grain, hardly any at all...just an almost overwhelming softness. I find myself wanting to see a little more detail in the darks, just a smidge more, particularly right next to the youngster's head...he seems to be sinking into this great and dark abyss that could almost be seen as a little bit scary/forboding if we let our imaginations roam. To me this looks like an image that was run through a noise reduction program before a very subtle grain was added, I could be wrong, but since no processing notes were left, I can only guess.
I took a look through your portfolio, to see if this "softness/glow" is something you use alot, and I must say your work is very intriguing. Perhaps I am wrong in calling it a "softness"...I think what I really yearn to see in this image is just a little more detail that I know must be there but is being swallowed up by the darkness...regardless, this is still a pleasing image, and as I mentioned before and from your comments below, many people agree. |

bro3.jpgby PedroComment: oh...this I love...and I really loved " A Long Road to Here", I just find this particular image so moving...here we are simply presented with the man and his "situation"...nothing hidden, simple and true...what a powerful series of images you have made here...emotional yet not "sappy"...there is this overwhelming majesty and power. |

Ken Vasoli of The Starting Lineby hstegComment: Hi Harrison and greetings from the "Critique Club"
Wow...only one comment...what's going on with commenting lately? Seems like commenting has really gone down through out these challenges...anyway, I'll get on with the "critique" now.
Overall this is a very effective documentary style shot. I like the strong contrast and the grain I feel does enhance the image and actually gives it a nice "filmy" quality. I like the tight crop, but I am curious about how this may have looked if you had pulled back just a bit? Who knows right?
Generally speaking I think the masses like their concert pictures to be bright and pretty, most of us have been to concerts and know what magic occurs when there's a good lighting tech around...people love being dazzled by pomp and pretty colors. I don't know if gig shooting is a road you are going to continue traveling down, but might I suggest taking a peek at a couple fellow DPCer's work? My all time favorite show photographer is terje...his work is slick, professional, and simply quite delicious...the guy is truly an artist. Also take a peek at Xion's work, particularly his "Buskers" series which can be found in [B[+]]: people: buskers...Xion is such the master of the street candid as far as I am concerned, his work sings.
If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to drop me a line, I hope I have given you atleast a couple of things to think about and look at...have fun! : } |
