i guess it's only the perspective that makes you thinking that they crashed.
i think, the left plane was higher than the other and more in direction to the photographer (?)

Badwaterby gaurawaComment: if you say, you photographed this one on the mars, i would believe it, because this perfectly flat area in the foreground in composition with the mountains in the background look so surreal!
and then the planet in the upper left corner is planet earth... ;P
