PROS: Technically sound portrait, doesn't feel like a candid, or much of a setup, almost like a snapshot but also directed somewhat. And I actually think its cropped pretty good. I don't see any wasted area in the frame, and the exposure is good, a bit conservative maybe, could improve on contrast.
CONS: Overblown in areas. I think you had a window to work the shutter up a few stops for a better colorful contrast. Whites are dominating here. Some grays would help.
VERDICT
Average at best, Id say slightly under-rated, but nothing smiting. PM me if you have questions or answers about this critique.

I can appreciate many things about this shot, and also find it a bit hard to overlook the flaws. There are many good photographers on this site who specialize in flora, and Ive learned alot from the work here to know that this shot is on par with the best, at least technically.
The framing and focus are very above average and I guess a its a good choice going with that aperture setting for a shallow d.o.f. maybe a few stops down to 5.6 might give a better effect. I enjoy the particular look of this flower too, it's great for close crops like this, lighting isn't the best, hurting the contrast however.
Now a look at some flaws; at least artistically. The color for this isn't that vivid. It looks de-saturated a bit. Better contrast could be achieved through the color. I also think the noise distracts, maybe over-use of levels?
Overall, a solid floral. I think it scored what it deserved, PM me if you have questions about this critique.

I think the photo suffered in this challenge because the main focus isn't the flower. I think its the main reason why points were docked.
Technically, shot well, the frame is filled up good, maybe a closer crop wouldn't hurt this by giving it a more abstract feel.
Artisically, very nice and not over-processed but for advanced edtiting, probably under-processed. Maybe you could have taken advantage by boosting the tones a bit. I think this is pretty creative and moody. I like the production values of the shot. But like you mentioned in the details, its out of the box, and most of these become overlooked even though there is loads of creativity.
Overall, a 5.0 is a good score in a challenge like this...luckily, you didn't fall under average. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

As for the challenge, it sure fits of course, but the choice of subject is less exotic than most of the flowers seen in the challenge.
Technically, the photo is sound. I like the tones on the petals and the shallow depth of field works well against the rocky background which provides good contrast overall, bringing out the subject even more. The framing is ok, cropped as close as possible for a top shot of a cluster of flora.
Artistically, not the most pop or wow factor given that you had the chance to take advantage of the Advanced Editing clause. Not sure what you could have done here, I'd like to see this in Black and White.
I think this is one of those shots that isn't flawed too much, but also gives a little lasting impression, at least artistically. I think it scored what it deserved, it's a well photographed subject but lacking in drama. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
