Chair abstract (with an overhead view)by GrenComment: The composition here is the strength of the image, for me. I really like the vantage point and the balance of the seat and the wooden floor. I'd like a little more light towards the back of the chair - the shadow is a little too dark for me, though not so much as to remove the shadow completelty.

SF Bay Area from above Berkeleyby r_sandlerComment: An interesting image. As the top two thirds of the sky has little of interest I'd prefer to see the horizon much higher in the frame with just the interesting lower sky detail included.

Initial thoughts
Lovely symmetry and quality of light
Composition/ Content
A beautiful and simple composition. I love the way it has symmetry from left to right but not from top to bottom.
The curving roof lines are beautiful and I particularly like the way the central âbeamâ cuts the image in half top to bottom.
The grey lines at the left and right lead the eye directly to the window itself.
The blues and clouds of the window are the focus of the image and all the lines serve to emphasise this.
Camera Work - Technical
Exposure is wonderful â I love the way youâve got the blues and whites of the sky just right and yet also achieved that ethereal light through the ceiling itself.
Digital Processing - Technical
Canât see any problems â all looks great to me.
Any negatives?
Not that you could have done a thing about this but I find the dark shadows beneath the grey coving on the left a bit distracting. Because the dark line they create is so much wider than the lines of interest my focus tends to be pulled to the left a little. In an ideal world there would be a second grey sheet covering this as there is on the right. As I said, I am mentioning this only to be complete in my own assessment â I appreciate fully that a) you couldnât change this and b) the image is still absolutely wonderful and successful regardless.
Fits The Challenge
Very much so.
My Opinion On The Photo
I really like this. I enjoy looking at it. The curves, the blue sky and the ghostly quality of the light coming through the ceiling make it a very appealing image. Message edited by author 2003-03-16 08:53:14. |

Initial thoughts
Out of focus. A little bland.
Composition/ Content/ Background
Youâve already mentioned focus in your own comments, so I am not telling you anything new when I say this image suffers from lack of sharp focus.
I do like the jewellery itself though Iâd not know without you telling me that a) itâs jewellery as opposed to a fancy bottle tag and b) that itâs the main focus of the image.
Aspects I find offputting: the bottle does not seem to be entirely vertical within the image; the background would be better curved beneath the bottle to create a seamless background to the image; the colour of the background clashes with the two colours in the bottle; the composition is a little unbalanced â too close to centred to be successful as a non-centred composition but too far from centred to work as a centred composition; because the background is so âbusyâ I find the shadow on the background more interesting than the foreground object itself.
Camera Work - Technical
Focus, as above.
Might be worth playing with lighting â how about secondary lighting through the bottle from behind, what about softer lighting or perhaps harsher lighting providing some highlights off the bottle and jewellery?
Fits The Challenge
Not hugely, for me. I think that this would be the kind of thing which a jeweller might commission but would make little sense as a generic addition to a stock library â the jewellery is too prominent for it to be used as a generic bottle of perfume or alcohol.
My Opinion On The Photo
Would love to see this retaken with some changes as discussed above.

Implosionby stephanComment: Critique Club
Initial thoughts
High impact with obvious emotional message.
Composition/ Content
I like the composition of this image â the balance of the âimplosionâ with the leaning man and the grassy earth is strong.
The stance of the man is highly emotive â he looks drained, tired, sad, despairing.
The âwhiteâ highlights in what is otherwise a silhouette are also interesting as are the âwhiteâ plants.
Background
If one takes the âimplosionâ as the background â I like it â great shape and the texture is kind of like paint brush strokes.
Camera Work - Technical
Hard to tell.
Digital Processing - Technical
I am really no expert on this style of post-processing so I donât know how to comment. Given that the image is high impact and emotive Iâd hazard that the processing has achieved what you intended.
Fits The Challenge
Yes.
My Opinion On The Photo
I like it and find it interesting but wouldnât personally want it on my wall/ in my house.

Alien Transmissions At Dawnby magnetic9999Comment: Wonderful colours and cloud shapes in the sky - romanticism bought back down to earth with a bump by the silhouette shapes. I'd love to see this with something more interesting as the silhouette shape. |

Yellow on Iceby KazComment: I like this a lot and would score it an 8 if the quality of the image were better. Great colours, composition and light. I love that reflection.
